I purchased a new dell with windows 8.1, new monitor, new router to replace our ancient one. I use a modem from time warner and currently have our "old" computer running XP connected to the modem & router and have a few devices (IPad, phones, printer) connected wirelessly.
Instead of hiring someone to set up for me (as I have in the past) I figure I should just dive in & do this myself. But I have some basic questions. So where do I start? hook up new router and modem to new (better computer) and then connect old computer wirelessly so kids can use it for the internet? Or hook up new computer wirelessly and leave (new) router and modem connected to old computer? I think we should network both computers - but i am concerned the older one (which we would let the kids use and no longer keep sensitive info on or use to purchase) could be vulnerable to viruses. does that mean we should not network it to the new one? If old computer is hooked up wirelessly is that even an issue if there is no file sharing?
TIA.
