Advice on purchasing new laptop

Hello, I'm looking to purchase a new gaming laptop and I have NO knowledge of laptops whatsoever. All I know is that the laptop I have is pretty much rubbage and has to run every game on Low/Ultra Low settings.
ASUS i5-3210M CPU @ 2.50-GHz
Installed Memory(RAM): 4.00GB (3.98 Usable) 64-bit

Anywho, I was looking at Alienwares and MSI's, I have no idea to look at info to determine if it's good or not. My price range is about $1100 - $1500.
I don't want the BEST of the BEST, heat isn't a problem. Just looking for good, reliable, i7 and not like 15lbs. I was looking at the

MSI GE Series GE70 Apache Pro-012 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 12GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

but wasn't sure if it was a good choice. I was looking at reviews and everything but I'm still in need of assistance.

I think the GE70 was reviewed at Notebookcheck.com

And if I recall, it was in their top 10 gaming. HOWEVER!!! Gaming and laptops is an awful mix still with CES just ending there are new laptops on the way.

Notebookcheck has game scores and temperature readings you can review.

Well Alienware just released their

new redesigned slimmer gaming machines. They've discontinued the Alienware 18 and replaced it with the Alienware 15 which has 4K graphics. Their new models are the Alienware 13, 15 and 17. They are also promoting the external graphics amplifier along with the redesigned laptops.
