They don't make it anymore, but I think the current "replacement" for it is either the MP530 or MP830. I like the auto-feed feature for faxing and scanning. The MP780 is used with a iMac G5 flatpanel and a G4 tower... and occasionally a G4 laptop and a HP/Compaq laptop.
I don't like that it is not networkable - we use a manual USB switch - but it is not that big of a deal. I would prefer to put it on the ethernet LAN, but the scanning portion does not like "sharing". The scans are clear and accurate. The bundled scanning software isn't that great, but the scans get in and it is easy to use.
The ink cartridges are a little pricy, but the quality is really good. I have tried non-Canon cartridges and do not recommend doing that. The prints were bad. As soon as I went back to Canon carts, everything looked great. My MP780 sits next to a HP 5000N which is on the ethernet LAN...
If you get a standalone scanner, the sheet feed feature may come in handy, so something to look for.
I am helping a friend of mine choose a scanner for her Mac - she currently uses Sibelius software and the scanning software that came with it to scan sheet music in order to edit the music for a music class she teaches. Right now she has a very cheap HP all-in-one that does not work well, and errors out. I am planning to buy a scanner and let her try it a few weeks.
Can anyone offer their suggestions on the best model scanner or all-in-one to buy for a Mac??
