Advice on buying a new stereo...

I'm a college student looking to buy a new stereo system for our apartment. I don't want to get another shelf system, so I'm looking into getting a receiver and a cd player (or disc changer). I want to get something with some power so we can throw some parties, but I only have about $500 to spend on the entire system (which also includes me getting some more speakers too, so any advice there is also welcome). If any one has any advice concerning brands, models, or just general specs it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I don't know of anything that includes receiver, speakers, and player [that is party worthy] for only $500 bucks man Happy If it was that cheap, everybody would have one.

Recever: STRDE197 $150
CD: Sony SCDCE595 $150
Speakers: NHT SB-1 $150

$450!!!!

It's a really basic set up but it will sound a 1000 times better than a shelf system. Check it out.
