Advice Needed

by ladeevb / October 24, 2004 6:03 PM PDT

I have AVG 6.0 free version. When I scanned, it said 2 viruses. Send one to vault. The other could not go. This is message: trojan horse downloader.keenval.p
FileC:\program files\commonfiles\search upgrader\search upgrader.exe can not be removed. I have searched for this virus with no luck, and it is still on computer and I am so confused. I am not computer smart, where do I go from here. Help!
Thanks

I had the same problem, but I think I finally deleted this virus. Go to http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/KeenValue.html To learn about this virus. After that go to control panel/ad remove software, and eliminate every hot barcursors or we search bars you may have installed. Go to www.download.com and get spybot, it is updated to find this trojan. There are also so good advice at here.http://www.polderware.com/message_boards/mboards.mv?

Hey ladeevb!

Since you are new to computers let's start very silmply!

First, restart your computer and run it again. If you get the same result, go to an online scan. There you will be able to remove the offending file(s). In fact, they do it for you!
It is possible that you have a piece of spyware or adware here or a trojan or some combo of the three. I recommend these online scanners. The first and the third are primarily virus scanners but do catch their share of trojans. The second and the fourth specialize in adware spyware and trojans. cat:http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/licence.php http://www.webroot.com/services/spyaudit_03.htm
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
http://www.pestscan.com/
Each of these will remove the nasty for you. Just follow the instructions methodically and you'll be fine!
If you actually know the folder or file that it is in take it to http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus although I am not sure whether this one will remove the virus or trojan for you.
Please get back to me if you need more help.
Give me some more info about your system esp. security software and general specs. ie are you using windows etc.
Good luck!

You also have "it" here:

C:\program files\commonfiles\search upgrader\search upgrader.exe ??

Use Taskmanager (Ctrl-Alt-Del) to end these running processes if you can search upgrader.exe

Go to Add/Remove Programs (START, settings, control Panel) and uninstall search upgrader

Then :

Make sure you can view hidden and system files: Instructions here

Then Boot to safe mode: Instructions here

and delete:

C:\program files\commonfiles\search upgrader

Reboot

Then browse to the C:\documents and settings\\User Name (repeat for all users)\local settings\temp folder and delete all files and folders in it.
Then browse to the C:\Windows\Temp folder and delete all files in it.
Then in internet explorer click tools>internet Options>General. Click on Delete Files make sure you get all offline content as well.

IF you have winme or XP:

Then Disable system restore: Instructions here
Reboot

Enable System Restore.
