advertisements and site pictures not showing

Mar 1, 2004 6:32AM PST

hello since i got windows XP pro sp1 , when i got to the www.download.com site dose not show any pictures or advertisements it has a little box and it says click here , and on other sites when i click on a link for example the www.ebay.com.au site it says "The Connection was refused when attempting to contact
altfarm.mediaplex.com"

i was told to do this

It sounds like you can take care of the situation simply by clearing out
your web browser's cache and cookies. In case you've never heard these
terms before, I'll give you a quick explanation.

"Cookies" are small pieces of information "remembered" by your browser.
eBay uses cookies so that you can navigate through our Web site faster.
We also use cookies to personalise eBay - this includes "remembering"
the eBay account you're signed into, your selling preferences, My eBay
preferences, local trading region, and other information.

Occasionally, a cookie can become corrupted, which may mean eBay can't
communicate with your cookies correctly. This can cause problems of the
type you have described. You can easily fix this by deleting any
existing eBay cookies on your computer.

Your "cache" is the local storage where copies of images and web pages
are kept on your computer's hard disk (or in its memory), so the next
time your browser needs an image or web page, it can get it from your
cache. This allows for faster access to this information rather than
downloading a new copy each time you visit the image or web page.
However, this cache gets "full" and can cause pages to load slowly or
not at all.

To clear your cookies, please follow the steps below:

1. Close all of your Internet Explorer windows.
2. Go to your "Start" menu found on your task bar.
3. Select the "Search" or "Find" option, and "Files or Folders"
4. Type in Cookies in the search box and make sure that the "look in"
field is selecting your hard drive usually C:
5. Once it has pulled up the list of files and folders it has found,
double click the Folders labeled "Cookies" and delete all the files that
have the word eBay in them.

To clear your cache, please follow the steps below:

1. Click on Tools in the menu line at the top of the screen
2. Click on Internet Options
3. Select the 'General' tab
4. Then click on the 'Delete Files' button under the 'Temporary Internet
files' section (this is your cache)

If you are still experiencing this problem after clearing your cookies
and cache, please write back to us, and our technical team will
investigate this matter further.

I hope I have been of some assistance in this matter. Thank you for
being part of the eBay community, and have a great eBay day!

With best regards,

witch i did and there was no luck at all ? do use have any idea ?

There are some more things you can do:

Run the anti-parasites suite found HERE .

If you are using IE6 as your browser, go to Internet Options> Security and set security to default or 'medium' and at Advanced, go to 'Multimedia' down near the bottom and tick 'show pictures' and anything else you want. This may work on earlier versions too.

1. Please read the Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) article, "Web Page Displays an Image As a Red X or Not at All (Q283807)."

2. WinXP opens all picture files (gif, jpg, etc.) by default with the included Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. To reassociate graphics with some other viewer, first type the following at the command prompt and then press Enter, to unregister this file:

regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll

Um, Bill, you sure about this?

About number 2.
Seems to me that if I use another viewer, like Irfanview, I just define what type images I want it to view by default, and thats it.
No "un-registering" of anything.
I know your reputation for good advice, but wonder if this is really necessary?

It isn't ''required'' by any means -- just a way of getting it out of the picture.

And, speaking of picture, this uninstall will disable viewing of Thumbnails untill it's run again without the /u switch, which I should have mentioned.

Thanks.

for any possiblity that you have a hosts file. This is found under C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC\ and just called "hosts". It might have entries redirecting sites to nowhereland. If so, rename it and try again.
