Advantages of Mac of Windows

Apr 22, 2005 2:41AM PDT

many people have asked this already probably, but i was wondering about the advantages of Mac OS over Windows. i've heard some but they never made any sense to me. i've become somewhat tired of windows and the associated programs. but Mac is also very expensive. can you people give me any opinions or even links to hard facts about the differences between the operating systems.

Winotwo, I agree. Lampie's post covers most of it. Well written.
I have a PC for my favorite games at home, PC95.
Professionally, the Mac. Eight + hours a day for the last umpteen years. At Home also, Mac 10.

I've used both
May 3, 2005 2:40AM PDT

Hey--I've used both, and have found Windows easier to use. Most Mac addicts that I've met started with Mac and are just really used to it. Plus, there are so many more program options for Windows.--Neo

users used to Macs
Aug 10, 2005 3:18PM PDT

i agree, i'm starting my second year in college now and i've met a number of Mac users (no surprise, i'm majoring in Graphic Media)...i'm a Windows user (surprise to most)...one of my devoted Mac friends was considering buying a Windows laptop because of issues with her iBook...a $3000 alternative to my $1700 Toshiba (which is better in all hardware aspects except RAM (1 GB versus my 512MB (which i haven't decided to expand on)....she was actually considering buying a Windows laptop so she could "learn to use Windows."

it amazes me how many on both sides don't know how to use the other OS choice(s) they have and then gloat and brag about their own choice...personally, yes, i'm a Windows user, but from prior knowledge, and going to college classes with only Macs, i know my way around a Mac well enough to use it efficiently

I wonder
Aug 10, 2005 9:51PM PDT

what sort of iBook she has that cost $3000. The top of the line iBook sells for $1299 and has more features than your, supposed $1700 box.
A little research goes a long way to ensuring believability.

Perhaps you exaggerate a little

From your earlier post, have I to assume that you believe that all the Windows virus's are written by disgruntled Mac users?

Interesting

I wonder ... Page Two!

I'm wondering the same thing. How could someone spend $3,000 dollars for a PowerPC iBook, when the MacBook Pro with a Intel Core Duo processor retails at $2499 before taxes? As Arsenio Hall would say, "Thinks that make you go Hmmmmmmmmmm."

Not that I expect anyone to still be reading this thread, but my friend had a iBook G4, as well as a PowerPC G5 and one of the original, tripod-style HD Cinema displays, each of which she claimed to have spent $3000 on. I honestly don't know if that's true, but she said she had bought them all right at release, so--Apple prices being Apple prices--it wouldn't surprise me that's what they were at the time.

Some Industrial software application does not run on MAC
May 3, 2005 8:58PM PDT

I'm long time user of PC. I work at oil and gas industry and most of application run on Window base software examples are the software to operates plant and shutdown and safety system. This also include training software that were wrote for PC. I'm not sure about others such as flight control, NASA and nuclear plant etc. If they are also limited to PC that is too bad for MAC.
Beside that I'm pretty happy with my MAC.

Fact: The UK Military uses PC. Many of our Allies in the military use the PC also.

Govt. will ALWAYS use PC's
Jun 11, 2005 10:57PM PDT

I don't think I've ever seen a government desk with a Mac on it. My guess is that in most cases their hands are tied.
By law, or mandate, don't most branches of the government have to get 3 bids, and take the lowest one? I hope that for the sake of people like the astronauts, sometimes they knock off the lowest and highest, (like the Olimpics).
Because Macs have always had a higher front cost, at least on paper, the only government place where you ever see macs is in public schools. Steve pretty much gives them to schools for free.

Any public servants out there to confirm my theory?
(or to tell me tI'm full of it?)

There are civilian agencies who use Mac's and they suit there needs very well. I personally drool everytime I walk through their area and see those beautiful dual proc. G5's with ram more expensive then my car! So to answer your question, yes... they do.

These industrial programs
Jun 24, 2005 5:07AM PDT

Are these programs you speak of available to consumer? Or are they programs which companies provide you with to install on your home computer? If not, then it doesn't matter in the end. I would think that NASA, nuclear plants, the various oil companies would have their own computers at their offices to run these programs on, and you really wouldn't have to bring your home computer to work with you everday.

Mac versus windows..
May 6, 2005 2:46AM PDT

(1) When you buy a Mac is ready to run, everything is provided- (2)It's good to know that the worlds biggest computer company (yes there is only one Apple, yet many different PC manufacturers) has avoided all the threats associated with viruses...(3)Mac's crash just like any other computers, except they crash less than most other computers.(4)Firewire..great stuff (5)Movies...Nicole Kidman's film "Cold mountain" use 5 Macs to for final editing-Now that is very serious editing capabilities (6) I have a external super duper burner conneted via firewire- how fast..We'll lets put it this way the burner is made by Porche.(7)A Mac can open many PC files and I Have full MS 96,98, and XP 2000 on desktop- unfortuantely most PC's can open very few mac programs beyond Gif's and Jpeg.(Cool I have two seperate desk tops'"switching" is unreal application when on the net-
I simply leave the computer and my daughter switches to her own new desktop with her stuff on it- Oh yeah I nearly forgot the latest Mac- UNIX its a language program used by many institutions especially banks-
and there is more..basically, Steve JOBS wasn't only interested on how the mac performed from the inside, it needed to look great from the outside as well..Honestly arn't the mac's the sexiest looking machines.

Advantage - Mac
Jun 3, 2005 4:42AM PDT

Greetings, I travel for work and have converted from windows to a 12" Powerbook with Tiger 10.4. operating system. Tiger is, without any question.. the most advanced OS in the world! It "works" for you not like Windows where you work for, and on it, and constantly. Consumer reports gives Apple / Macintosh it's highest rating. I could go on and on but best to do this: Consider walking into a Apple store and see for yourself.
No, I don't work for Apple.

"Spotlight" a major feature of Tiger OS will change the way you use/think about computing.

I have Microsoft office for Mac installed so I have no issues with co- workers trading doc, ppt, excel, I connect via wireless, automatic anywhere. No blue screen, no crashes, no freezes. no viruses. A robust firewall, and my powerbook is mucho fast!

Interesting Quote
Jun 7, 2005 2:23PM PDT

A friend of mine recently went to a small convention/meeting in Los Angeles. One of the speakers was a man who was one of the programmers of Photoshop CS.

In addition to a wealth of how to information he gave out, and the speaking about of what is in store in the future of digital photography, the 2 questions he asked of the audience was what stood out the most.

1: How many here are using a MAC?
2: Why are you still using a MAC?

I have never used a MAC, and in the early days (1980s)
MAC was in fact the top of the line for artists and graphics.
APPLE has fallen behind. It doesn't mean there OS is bad, it means it cost way too much for equivalent hardware. And even though there are others who post that the G5 is "just as fast" well that is pure MAC bias and not fact.

Even Hollywood is dumping MAC because they have not kept up with multiprocessor units (MAC is limited to 2)
where they are quickly being passed by both Intel and AMD.

If they could bring down the high price and get with the processor program (and they might) as they just announce they are going to use INTEL CPUs soon, they might get out of the hole they are in.

3% to 5% of the market is not enough to get programmers to continue to write big budget software.

ADOBE has kept apple alive for years. If they decide to stop developing for the MAC, Apple may have to try and buy ADOBE just to save themselves.

Jobs should give up trying to own everything and sell the OS and then develop apps for it. Copy M$.
Let anyone build the hardware with Apple approval.
If I had to use a MAC, I would live as would eveyone else.

There is room for both and just as I am glad Intel has AMD to contend with, Gates hould have at least one thorn in his side, er APPLE in his side.

If I was Jobs, I'd have it on my business cards, my license plate, and engraved on my office door. He didn't need the job, or the money, and the way he got pushed out makes me very surprised that he didn't tell them to shove it where the floppy won't go.
To say to him that he can have his old job back, but only till they find a real CEO, must have taken huge trackballs, and I doubt that the crow population in northern Ca. will ever recover.

lampie, Nice writing still. 70+ posts on XT will tell you a few things. I find PC to be harder to learn and very involved. Mac is easier for me and the commands in graphic programs are wonderful and easy to learn. I am a graphic artist. PC and Mac are great tools to the Film Industry in Hollywood. Where would STAR WARS be without computers and powerful processors?
PC/MAC? Both are good.
Tomatoes/Tamatoes? Both are nice.
I like Mac in Advertising and Graphic Design.
My wife likes PC and Mac in business. Prefers PC.
Who's to say?

Your response was AMAZING! So much so that I have printed a copy of it, so that I could "gloss" over your research, and appreciate the knowledge that you possess. Thank you for the inspiration!

Besides, what would a "programmer" for Adobe Photoshop know about a Mac? Things that make you go "Hmmmmmmmm."

As of today, there are no advantages,
Apr 19, 2006 2:24PM PDT

just plain design...

And now look carefully, behind the reason why Mac using Intel..

All this years, many Mac users, doesn't aware or CAN ignored any viruses, Adware, Spyware, Malware etc. where as PC users, always worried about it.

When PC users, use P2P programs to download things... evryone is shouting DON'T DO IT, because there a risk of virus infection etc.

Meanwhile, Mac Users, can use it without thinking about those virus etc. They can download anything using anything (P2P program for example)

Now, the contract and/or production of Apple and IBM hardware are no longer available.. many (especially) those software and music/movies companies, approaching Apple, and say: Hey Apple, why don't you use Intel based, so they will have the risk as PC users, and we can say to the users.. DON'T USE P2P program now, because of the risk of virus etc. that could attack yout Mac.

Hence, those company can control and reduce piracy of their softwares, songs and movies..

Yes, thats how the business are running up there..

WHat a load of rubbish
Apr 19, 2006 9:57PM PDT

The Intel processor is NOT the reason why there are so many virus's on the Windows side of the computing world, Windows is the reason.
The Mac OS will still be the Mac OS regardless of the engine that is driving it.
The virus's that mess with Windows are built to mess with Windows regardless of what engine is driving it. AMD or Intel, it does not matter to the virus's, it gets in because Windows lets it in. Face it, Windows is just an insecure OS with more holes than a Swiss Cheese.

Stealing software is always illegal, not matter where it comes from, but Mac users are NOT at any more of a risk using P2P networks than they were when their machines were driven by IBM and Motorola.

There are currently NO virus's for OS X .

Dual Boot does not change that fact.

Dual Boot does not change that fact.
