Adobe opens in protect mode after update to Reader X 10.1.1

Dec 19, 2011 4:29AM PST

Windows 7 recently updated to Adobe Reader X 10.1.1 from 10.0 and now, every time I try to open a pdf file, the screen flashes, changes from 1368x720 down to 640x320, reduces screen size and open a dialog box stating "There is a problem with your system configuration". It gives options to open in protected mode, protected mode disabled, or always open in protected mode.

Okay, figured it out

For anyone else who is having this problem, ensure that the program has not defaulted to run in compatibility mode for Windows XP, Vista or 2k as this was the case for this computer (was defaulted to XP in 256 color and 620x480 resolution). Dell had created a primary administrator account when they built this computer for him (he is a teacher) so his permission level was also not set up properly for Adobe.

Answer
We're Running Win7 64 Bit & Reader 10.1.1 Just Fine Here,,
Dec 19, 2011 8:59AM PST

...but we would NEVER run System Mechanic on a machine, because of the potential problems it has caused others when the wrong cleanup item was removed, and we would NEVER run both McAfee and AVG at the same time. Too many conflicts. Adobe Reader runs fine on 64 bit machines and has been doing so here for the last few months since the update in September.

As to the Reader program itself, have you tried checking the "Preferences" section to make sure it DOES open in "Protected" mode and the Splash screen is disabled? (Open Reader, click on "Edit", in the upper left, choose "Preferences", then select the "General" category on the left.. In the bottom section, place a CHECK mark in the box next to "Enable Protected mode at startup" (It's a security feature and should be left enabled) and UNCHECK the box next to "Show splash screen".)

Hope this helps.

Thanks

Thanks Ken, but I couldn't access the entire screen since the resolution changed when Adobe did the update, so I couldn't get to all these settings anyway, even with the keyboard shortcut, which I did attempt to use before I figured this out.
