Adding USB hub

I only have two USB connections on computer and I need 2 additional ones so purchased a hub (4 connections). Neither my ISP or my printer will work if connected to the hub. What can I do?
Many thanks for any suggestions.

I'm sorry, your what?

In reply to: Adding USB hub

You mean your USB DSL "modem", and your printer, right?

Your hub should have an optional power adaptor to work in "powered" mode. Did you try that? (Doubt that's the problem though)

Yes - DSL modem

In reply to: I'm sorry, your what?

Sorry - yes neither Canon PIXMA MP500 printer and DSL modem won't work if connected to the 4 port USB hub that changes 1 USB hub into 4(doesn't have any sort of adapter)

Do you mean that you added an internal PCI card with 4 extra USB sockets on it or some sort of external network hub or a 4 port USB hub that changes 1 USB hub into 4

1 USB to 4

Do other devices work

In reply to: 1 USB to 4

when you plug them into the 4 way USB hub. Also... does the printer work OK when plugged directly into the PC's USB port without the 4 way ?

Am I right in assuming that you have had the printer working before and so all the printer drivers are loaded onto your PC

If other USB devices work with your new USB hub, I would suspect that the printer lead is at fault or there are no printer drivers loaded.

Or ...

try the hub in another machine. It might just be defective.

I assume that both the printer and the modem have external power, so don't use the power from the USB hub. Power can't be a problem then.
