Adding memory question

Jul 7, 2009 9:20AM PDT

When I checked with Crucial.com for adding memory to my laptop I got a response that I could add a 512MB to my already 256MB for a total of 768MB. However, I thought you could not add a 512MB to a 256MB already installed as the system may not recognize the added memory. Was this wrong information I was given?

You may be thinking about old rules about such. Or that old desktop you had that required pairs. Not all machines have those rules.

If it is the old PC memory or single channel DDR,you can mix and match, it it is dual channel memory DDR-2 there could be issues.

Where to find the DDR information?

I should have posted this in the first post:
Computer is a laptop Dell Inspiron 8200. Currently running on only 256MB. I want more memory on this so want to expand it.
I was looking at the Help and Support info on the computer but don't see anything about the DDR info.
Where should I be looking?

as my brother's dell inspiron 4150. I added another memory to his current by removing the old DDR memory. Crucial would also suggests some other alteternatives for your given laptop model.
