adding dvd drive to hp pavilion

Feb 8, 2004 10:34AM PST

[HP Pavilion 7935 desktop, win2k pro, athlon 1.7 ghz, 512mb ram and originally with a cdrw drive]

Recently i added a dvd drive and started the machine without the side panel to test. Everything was fine. I tested out a dvd movie and it played!

Shut off. Attached sidepanel and restarted. I get this message: "No operating system found".

Both the original CDRW drive and the new DVD drives are on the secondary channel and both are jumpered as CS.

I disconnected the dvd drive. Everything is back to normal. I disconnect the CDRW drive and attach the dvd drive. Everything is fine. I just can't use both of them together.

Please help.

Try one of the optical drives on the primary channel with the hard drive.

Tried that. Same message on boot.

HP email support is frustrating and so is their online support. I'm thinking it is the power supply. Is it?

CS is used if you have the 80 conductor cable (and it's connected proper.)

If not the old school rules apply.

Be sure that the FIRMWARE is uptodate in the CD/DVD drives.

how do i be sure of that? if it's not updated how do i update it?

one thing confusing me is why/how did it work fine the first time before attaching the side panel?

1. how do i be sure of that? if it's not updated how do i update it?

a. I check the maker's web site.
b. I follow their instructions.

2. one thing confusing me is why/how did it work fine the first time before attaching the side panel?

I don't let such things bother me. I like to work the issues list rather than theorise why things do that.
