Must be some IT help there advising that. I just put the RJ45 connectors on and plug them in to the switch and I'm done. No futzing with panels.
And yes, That's how I put in a WAP. But I tend to use a router as a WAP for cost.
I need some help figuring out my home internet set up. I currently have an Arris Surfboard SBG6580 router/modem, set up in my living room. Wifi is okay for smart tv, 2 ipads, 3 cell phones etc.. I had cat5e ran in 4bdr upstairs and 2 spots in the living room that all terminates down into a utility closet in the basement. I want to add an unmanaged switch in the basement, to connect the all 6 locations to my network.
Do I plug Ethernet cable into modem/router in the living room and on the other end in the basement do I plug that straight into the switch and everything works. I’ve also been told to terminate all 6 runs into an Ethernet patch panel and then into a switch.
Also the wifi gets slow at times, if I wanted to add a wireless access point upstairs in the future, would it be as simple as plugging in to one of the Ethernet connections upstairs that is connected to the switch in the basement. Thanks.
