Question

Adding a device to a wired router

Dec 6, 2015 8:57PM PST

Hi,

Hi,

I've been using a wired router (NetGear model 1G92725T02A16) connected to a Zyxel modem for several years and everything has worked well - I have only a MacBook Pro connected. The router has 3 more ports open and I want to add a Unix computer to it to share the DSL line. Can I simply power down, connect the Unix to the router and then restart according to NetGear instructions?

And I've plugged in Ethernet without power cycling the modem or router so your choice on that.

Hi again -- Would you recommend a manufacturer or cable type for me? I need @a 20 foot cable and am reading product descriptions for Belkin, Insignia, Dynex talking gold plated connectors, Mbps network, T network, male to male connectors, etc and really don't know what my needs are. Your advice?
