Question

Adding a 2nd Powerline Network Adapter??

Jul 4, 2014 9:56PM PDT

Our cable router is located upstairs. Our den is downstairs at the other side of the house, and the wireless signal is poor there.

We recently installed a Netgear 85Mbps Powerline Network Adapter Kit - XETB1001 so we could watch Netflix on the blu-ray in the den, and it now works great.

My question: What's the best way for us to also use our IPad in the den? Should we install a second Powerline Network Adapter Kit? If yes, where would we plug its cable to (the HDMI port on the TV?)? I ask this because I know the Ipad would need to connect to the TV's HDMI, but we only have 1 remaining open HDMI port so if we use it for the Ipad how then would we connect the Powerline Network Adapter?

We sure would appreciate any advice on this. Thanks!!!

Alan

Answer
I think the magic does not quite do that

There seems to be a issue with how this device ( Powerline Network Adapter Kit - XETB1001 ) actually works. The Powerline adapter does extend the network to the den but it mimics a wired connection. The iPad needs a wireless network connection and does not utilize an HDMI connection to the TV. You do not indicate the way the BluRay connects to the powerline adapter but it must be a wired connection, otherwise the iPad would be able to connect also.
My suggestion would be to add a wireless access point to the powerline adapter or install a simple Router to the powerline adapter in the den.

Sorry I Was Not Clearer...

Thank you for responding - much appreciated.

Sorry I wasn't clearer. Let me try again:

1. The Adapter indeed mimics a wired connection. Currently, there is a wire from the Adapter into the back of the blu- ray.

2. When I connect the Ipad to a different TV I use the Apple connector between the Ipad and the HDMI of the TV. (The connector is sold by Apple and looks like the Ipad "charger cable".)

What I'm after is a way to connect the IPad to the other TV (the one with the poor Wi-Fi signal which also has the blu-ray and Powerline adapter). I need to somehow improve the wireless signal for the Ipad so that I can then make the connection at that TV and actually see something.

I am hoping this can be done simply as, for example. Adding a second router or a WAP might be beyond my skills.

Hope the above clarifies.

Thank you again,

Alan

(Hope this doesn't appear twice... )

Thank you for responding! Much appreciated.

I'd not heard of this product till I read your post. It looks like it might be exactly what I'm after.

Would I install it without touching the current Adapter (in other words, I'd wind up with both)?

Thanks again,

Alan

I think these work in pairs.

There are some that expand an existing power line unit but the one I noted is a kit so you would design and use as you see fit.
