Add/Remove Programs

Hello, I have recently installed Sygate (freeware) as my firewall and looking at my Add/Remove programs, I've noticed that many programs and microsoft updates are no longer showing. Missing are: Avast, Adaware, ALL the previously installed microsoft updates, etc. None of the programs now listed have any add/remove capabilities.

I am wondering why this would happen and how I can ensure that all programs are reinstated. I had created a new restart point before installing Sygate and know that I can restore.

Would appreciate any and all help.

Are the missing programs still avaialble in Start > Programs?

Try restarting the computer if you have not already done so.

In Add/Remove select "Show updates if not already selected.

If the problem persists Restore to before Sygate was installed. Then reinstall it in case the first installation was corrupt.

You didn't mention what OS you are using. I too as well as some others have had problems with Sygate when applied to an XP OS. Myself and some others have had much better luck with Zome Alarm

Hope this is helpful.

I've Had That Happen After Using System Restore...

In reply to: Add/Remove Programs

The System Restore process will occasionally remove registry entries for programs listed in the Add/Remove Programs section.. If the programs are still there and functioning, you may want to try and uninstall, then reinstall, by finding their uninstall programs in another location... Sometimes, the uninstall can be made from the Start-All Programs menu for each program in question. Also, on Windows XP, open Windows Explorer and navigate to the C\Windows\Installer folder.. Although there are a lot of files listed there, check the properties for all of the files with an .msi file extension. (Hovering the mouse of each .msi file should tell you what you want to know.) You can usually find the original setup program there and double clicking on it will allow you to uninstall the problem program.

Hope this helps.

I had restored my system to a previous date and all is well within my Add/Remove Program. Everything that I had previously loaded is located there and I'm thankful that I diligently have kept things to a minimum in the program files (less to worry about if "funny things" happen).

Have set up ZoneAlarm again and will be using this as my firewall. Was wanting to leave ZA as there was a conflict of ZA allowing Avast to access the internet for updates. Avast did provide advice about adding proxy rights to IE and I entered same proxy information into ZA so am receiving updates.

Interesting to note that I had sent a message to Sygate to ask if this was "normal" and was advised that "it wasn't and that they did not know what to advise." No further help or advice was provided.

My message read: "Needing your help - have JUST installed the freeware version of Sygate firewall and after going into my add/remove programs, I see that the majority of programs have been deleted (Avast, Adaware, Spybot, ALL microsoft updates and service packs, etc.).
I also noted that any of the programs listed do not have the ability to remove/change anything.
Is this normal? Please advise what to do to reinstall everything (thankfully I created a system restore point before starting this firewall)."

and their reply: "No it isnt normal. I doubt that installing the firewall is what created this problem. I dont know what to tell you." Good old customer service at it's best! Good thing it was only Freeware and that I didn't pay but it does make me wonder if there is something wrong with my system.

So again Thank You both for your help and support. Take Care.
