Add and remove windows componets

by chiefbob65 / October 8, 2009 3:15 PM PDT

I have a Dell 4300S with Windows XP Home edition Service Pack two. The following Error occurs every time I try to use the Add and remove Windows Components feature:

-Set up was unable to open information file comnt5.inf
-Contact your system Administrator.
-The specific error code is 0X2 at line 2088999592
-The application could not be initialized.

Here is sysoc.inf File. What do I need to do to remedy this issue?

I had tried to remove Hide from in behind the comnt5.inf line and it did not work so I put it back. if any of you computer techs have a working copy to compare this file show me what I need to change or a work around. I am trying to install fax service from the add remove windows components feature.

Note: I Tried to use the Windows installation cd in attempt to copy files but keep getting (Windows can not copy from cd because version is older than version running currently or in words to that effect.

Maybe it's only the shortcuts that are gone, not the programs?

The programs are
c:\windows\system32\notepad.exe
c:\windows\system32\calc.exe

See if these programs exist. If so, make new shortcuts and put them where you like.

Finally ran into this error.
by R. Proffitt Forum moderator / October 8, 2009 8:47 PM PDT

The causes were:

1. Malware damage. It was so deep that we had to re-install the OS.
2. Registry cleaners. Again, a fresh OS install.
3. A pirate XP install. This was a tough one. The owner felt entitled to the OS so we had to wear a poker face and wait for them to figure out that such a version can't be supported by anyone.
