Adaptec 2410SA SATA RAID firmware update error

Mar 22, 2008 9:59AM PDT

Hello, I bought an Adaptec 2410SA SATA RAID on ebay, and I tried to update the firmware (using the included tool for flashing AFU.EXE) to the latest one but during the update process.

-The actual firmware is v4.1-0 Build 7235
-The firmware I am trying to use is
Adaptec Serial ATA 2410SA firmware version b8209
Filename: 2410sa_fw_b8209.exe
Date: 19 Dec 2006
Size: 1.0 MB
Language: English US

I get the following error before the update process

Flash File's OEM Type(0x10) does not match Controller's OEM Type(0x60)

What can be wrong? I downloaded the update from Adaptec.com

Thank you in advice and greetings from Mexico

(NT) Is this a FastTrak S150 SX4-M ?

Yours doesn't match the one at Adaptec.
Mar 23, 2008 12:47AM PDT

Yours looks like an OEM used in Dells, other makes. The J5 connection is missing, etc.

Where did this card come from?

Ebay
Mar 23, 2008 12:56AM PDT

It came from this guy
:RTQ:US:1123">http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180158508555&ssPageName=ADMELove:RTQ:US:1123

If you notice on the memory chips, there is a sticker, it says IBM RC

Maybe the OEM is IBM

I couldnt find a firmware there, I even have a firmware dump made with the utility

They didn't bother to use a picture of the card that...
Mar 23, 2008 12:59AM PDT

Your card does not match the picture at ebay. It is an OEM card and that's the bottom line. Unless you can identify where it came from then we're at an impasse.

Why does this need the update?

No match

Yes, it doesnt match, but I boughth it from that guy, I will try a 2007 update from IBM and see what happends, I want to update it because it gives me an error when it gets to the 137gb limit, (48 bit lba),

thank you for your help

Did you find the firmware update?
Apr 22, 2008 5:50AM PDT

I have what I believe is the same card. Did you find the IBM firmware update? Did it work? If so do you still have the URL or what you searched for?

Thanks,
Brian

RE: Did you find the firmware update
May 24, 2008 6:06PM PDT

Thanks to the posts here i realized that i was in the same situation. I was able to run the firmware update with the ibm serveRAID support CD. I used the image found on this link, and it worked properly:
http://www-304.ibm.com/systems/support/supportsite.wss/docdisplay?lndocid=MIGR-60624&brandind=5000019

However, some further digging got me to the most updated version:
http://www-304.ibm.com/systems/support/supportsite.wss/docdisplay?lndocid=MIGR-61707&brandind=5000008

For those concerned the Adaptec 2410SA that is the ibm oem version falls under the category "IBM ServeRAID-7t SATA controller". Just download the .iso and burn, restart the server and you should be prompted to update the firmware on the card.

Hope this helps.
-K.

worked
May 27, 2008 10:40AM PDT

I updated the controller booting the v.7.12 (first .iso link), the v9.00 (second .iso link) have no boot feature, so update was impossible with the v9, used v7.12 instead.

I updated my card from previous version (v4.1-0 Build 7235) to v4.1-0 (8195)

I am using Clarkconnect 3.2 linux distro with "Red Hat/Adaptec aacraid driver (1.1.2-lk2 Nov 22 2005)" driver, with the older firmware (build 7235) it fails when lots of HDD activity (I/O error), now i am trying stressing the HDD with large files and it seems to be stable(as far now), but i will post some test updates later.

I can also confirm that the 7.12 disk also worked for me. I now have a nice (cheap) vmware ESX test server.

worked fine

After days of testing with the new firmware, it got stable!!

How to install?
Oct 30, 2008 8:01AM PDT

Hi,
How did you update the BIOS from the bootable CD? I got a message saying it found an IBM RAID card something and a command prompt starts with Root@None or something like that. I have no clue what I am supposed to type

The reason I want to try to update BIOS is because I get horrible performance in HD Tune and HD Tach, average speed is only 46MB/s for 2-Seagate SATA2 500GB in RAID0. Without RAID, average of a single drive is around 80MB/s

Same Problem
Sep 24, 2008 8:04PM PDT

Hi,

I have the same problem. Thanks for the solution!

IMO the Adaptec OEM program has failed here, by shipping cards with Adaptec written all over, using Adaptec drivers, and Adaptec boot software, boot messages. Adaptec diagnostics detects it as an Adaptec card. Obviously one thinks it is an Adaptec card. But Adaptec do not support it! And Adaptec Storage Manager does not detect this card and gives an error message "Update to the latest Driver", despite it is running on the latest Adaptec driver. At least with the original BIOS.

Microsoft Signed?
Sep 24, 2008 9:32PM PDT

Another issue; 2003 Server 64 Installation identifies this board as an Adaptec board, and installes the Microsoft Signed Driver. If I install the IBM driver, Server 2003 blue-screens after reboot....

What I learned about that.

Be sure your hardware is on the Microsoft HCL for that OS. Some may think otherwise but unless Adaptec offers a fix I change the board.

Hitachi OEM Adaptec 2410SA variant
Feb 5, 2009 9:27PM PST

I ran into a similar problem with a couple Adaptec AAR-2410SA controllers I purchased recently on eBay, assuming they were retail Adaptec cards. In my case, the controller OEM type is 0x80. I was unable to determine for which company Adaptec built these controllers, so I emailed Adaptec support and they were kind enough to inform me that these controllers were made for Hitachi. So far, though, that info hasn't been helpful in locating the latest firmware for the cards [they're currently running 4.1-0 (6439)]. I've emailed Hitachi, but haven't received a response. Has anyone else run across one of these Hitachi/Adaptec 2410SAs and managed to locate firmware for it?

Hitachi 2410SA firmware update
Mar 30, 2009 1:07AM PDT

Here you can find the last release by Hitachi:

http://www2.hitachi.co.jp/ubs/pc/ha/download/drv_2006/jfw0101.exe

Has anyone tried to force a firmware of another brand ? Since cards are quite the same, it should be possible to flash IBM or Hitachi cards with standard firmware from Adaptec. To bypass flasher control, it may be possible to modify the offset where the OEM number is set, I guess.

Force BIOS Update on Adaptec AFU
Jan 17, 2011 4:00AM PST

Use this command to force Adaptec BIOS update.
Warning-When I did this from Hitachi and IBM BIOS, the RAID set I had configured with the previous BIOS had to be reconfigured.
Once the RAID was reconfigured the RAID worked fine from that point forward.
command:
afu UPDATE /SkIp

Yes thats right, the /SkIp is case sensitive.

Force update worked on 2200S variant also
Jul 19, 2011 11:00AM PDT

Thanks for the info. We had an Adaptec 2200S variant that would not work with Windows 7 for anything. Turned out the BIOS version and Vendor ID were not stock OEM. Force flashing to the stock firmware worked like a charm.
command:
afu UPDATE /SkIp
It would probably work on those Dell Perc 320 cards out there too.

Raid Re-Configured
Jan 27, 2012 7:32AM PST

I have one of those IBM ServeRaid 7T aka Adaptec AAC2410sa raid cards that I found rediculously cheap at a recycle shop. They had no clue what the card was. I managed to update the firmware using the adaptec bios with the /SkIp switch successfully. I then set up my Raid 5 array using 4 x 250 gb WD drives ok, but having great difficulty installing an o/s on it. The install keeps hanging about one third of the way through, and I think I've pinponted it to the controller? I had a successful Server2008 install on it with 4 smaller drives prior to the upgrade. Maybe should have left well enough alone?
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Raid Re-Configured
Jan 31, 2012 12:57AM PST

Success! Started from scratch again for the 3rd time. Re-initialized the drives to wipe, set up a new Raid 5 config with the clear option, it took a while but the o/s loaded nicely afterwards. All good so far with the new install. Nice to know that you can circumvent the OEM Branded bios and use stock firmware on a nice piece of hardware. I have an ARC-3405 SAS controller on another server here that I purchased used as well. Firmware update no problem with stock Adaptec .roms and running very well.
