Question

ActiveX Error Message at Startup

May 5, 2019 8:30AM PDT

At startup I've lately been receiving this message in Windows 10:

"Web Browser -- one or more activex controls could not be displayed because either your current security settings" etc., this appearing in a white box in the middle of the screen. It goes on to say a page can't load because of this. I have no idea what page is being referred to, nor what program the page is in. I'm curious about the "web browser" reference. Everything I've read says to go into Internet Explorer to fix this . . . but to my knowledge I don't have IE on my machine. I have Edge, which I gather is totally different. So, how to make this annoyance stop?

I have the impression the problem cropped up after a recent Windows update. I had trouble with MS Word, too; had to clean reinstall it. It's fine now, but what about the ActiveX dilemma?

two causes

Either the windows system has corrupted ActiveX, or the browser is outdated, or the page accessed is setup incorrectly. If you only see this on one site, I'd assume the website has the problem.

No Page or Site

But I'm not using IE (although I now realize I have it). This happens on computer start-up, not when using IE or any browser. An error message on start-up: what does that signify?

Windows 10 still has Internet explorer. Just type "Internet" in the search box and you can run it.

for correcting me on that point. I have now tried changing a setting in IE which someone claimed would make the error message go away (enable signed ActiveX controls): didn't work, still got it.

Fixed?

This setting in IE may have done it: Tools - Internet Options - Security - Enable Protected Mode. However this came up in the first place, after this setting change I restarted the computer twice without getting that error message. Maybe that is the end of it.
