The Canon S95 and G12 are good choices for point and shoot cameras.
The DSLR will permit you to get better low light shots and less noise.
But the cost will be more.
The best configuration for a DSLR would be to get the kit lens for general photography and a non-zoom very bright lens for shots of the child. Something like a 50mm f/1.4 lens.

We are shopping for a new digital camera for photo shooting on my 18 months old active son. We need fast shots and good low-lighted photo from this camera. We never used DSLR before, but it is an option to us. So far we are thinking either point-and-shoot camera, like Canon S95 or Cannon G12, or some entry level DSLR. Any suggestion?
