What is the best settings for action shots such as a kids soccer game? How can I get the fastest shutter speed and picture quality?

Soccer Game

Assuming that the game is outside during the daytime.

The S80 has a lot of ''shooting modes'' available, but none are suited to assuring good actions shots.

Switch the camera to Shutter priority AE mode.

That mode lets you set the shutter speed and the camera will set the aperture to assure a correctly exposed photo.

Start with a shutter speed of about 1/250th of a second. That should be sufficient to freeze the action and prevent motion blur.

Check the results after a few shots and if you encounter any unwanted motion blur, set the shutter speed one step faster.
Some people like to see a little motion blur of the hands or legs .... it gives the appearance of movement.

When shooting soccer with a digital camera it is difficult to follow the action if you are using the LCD to compose the shot. If you find you are missing a lot of shots, start using the viewfinder to compose your shots.

Thanks for the help. I Also read that I can adjust the ISO rating up to 400. Is there any downside to doing that?

Avoid the high ISO in most compact digital camera

The higher ISO, the higher the noise level shown in the shooting pictures ( similar to grain in film ). Keep the ISO at the minimum. It will be helpful when shooting in the dimmer light condition.

how to change settings
Mar 3, 2006 7:25AM PST

This was my exact question but for the FUJI S9000. I know how to choose the shutter priority setting . How do I set it for 1/250th of a second. And what would be the next setting as you mentioned going up if that did not give good results?

I have had good results on AUTO but I'd like to learn how to use more of these settings.

Thanks in advance............

Fujifilm S9000

Shutter Priority is on page 42 of the Fujifilm S9000 User's Manual.
In Shutter Priority mode, use the Command Dial to change shutter speeds.
The Command Dial is identified on page 20 of the User's Manual.

To increase shutter speed by one full f-stop from 1/250th of a second, you would set it to 1/500th of a second (twice as fast).
