Question

Acronis - Utterly useless support

Sep 3, 2017 12:40PM PDT

Does anyone know how to disable the spyware imbedded into Acronis?

I have Acronis 2017 and whenever I run a backup, I get one status email that I expected and configured in the notification tab. However, I also get another one from norepy-abc@acronis.com that contains far less status information - and a button labeled [Details]. If you click the [Details] button, it takes you to the Acronis website where the details of the backup run are available!

I do not (and never will) use Acronis Cloud. These backups are of a local machine to a local drive. There is no reason on Earth that this information needs to go to Acronis.com. Also, the redundant emails from norpley-abc@acronis.com are just useless clutter.

So, I sent a message to Acronis via their support website asking how to disable this. Their reply took almost a week and they did not even bother the read the email, which very clearly stated the question. What I got was a boilerplate reponse telling me how to unsubscribe from their newsletter! (Which I did long, long ago.)

I have contacted Acronis support on other issues in the past and they have always either simply ignored the request or sent me some sort of completely inane and/or irrelevant answer - just like they did this time. I have yet another support request on this pending, but don't expect that their "support" center in GiveADamniStan will ever provide any useful information.

PS: Anyone considering Acronis should very seriously reconsider. Acronis 2018 professes to be anti-spyware, but is more likely sypware itself!
In addition, they have absolutely the worst customer service imaginable. I recently retired from a 30+ year career in IT. I have seen customer service from many, many computer software and hardware companies - all over the spectrum. Acronis is by far the worst in my experience - and that is saying something!

You may have to bail. Why?

Back in 2011 Acronis move to web activation and more over the years.

As to your issue with support, the software and company goals do not mesh with your desires. Time to move out.

I have 2016 and, while it's not what it once was,

I'll continue to use it. The trick was to NOT create an Acronis account. Mine will allow me to close that box and run the program normally. I also refuse to use their cloud services. You can run Acronis backup from bootable media, however and not install it at all. I'll do that sometimes but having it installed does allow some nice things like viewing or extracting individual files from old images from within the OS. One new feature I don't like is that you must delete old images using that bootable media. If you delete them manually or move them to a new location, the program generates an error the next time you launch it. I do like that it allows a wider range of partition resizing during cloning operations than some other programs. I've not, however, needed to call them for support so can't speak to such experiences. I'll keep 2016 for now.
