Acrobat Problem

May 9, 2004 12:45PM PDT

Hi, this one's pretty strange. I have the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Pro (6.0, and I installed the latest updates). I also have windows xp pro with all the windowsupdates. Whenever I open a pdf in Internet Explorer and then close that window, explorer.exe causes a memory read error. This causes BOTH explorer and Internet Explorer (all open windows) to crash. Explorer restarts but Internet Explorer doesn't. Why does this happen and how can I prevent it?

(If you're interested, here's the ultimate test. If I open a pdf in internet explorer AND THEN change to a normal webpage in that window AND THEN close that window, explorer.exe doesn't crash. The window closes normally. So, in order for this error to occur an IE window displaying a PDF ONLY must be closed.)

There isn't enough clues in your post to find any real spot-on discussion or cure.

BUT, have you run your disk cleanup, then go looking for ACR*.TMP files? Adobe tends to collect thousands of these.

In closing, I have seen such behaviour, but it vanished after I manually downloaded and installed latest printer, video and motherboard drivers.

There's also some issue with having a PDF in IE and trying to open another PDF from Explorer. The response I got on that was "don't do that."

I have had the exact same problem with my computer. If anyone finds a fix this is highly irritating. I will try the driver method.

If the Web Integration fails, you get to uncheck that feature.

Adobe has yet to offer a cure.
