Acer Travelmate 8003Lmi vs Acer Aspire 2025

Sep 3, 2004 8:38PM PDT

I've been trying to choose between an Acer Aspire 2025wlmi and a Toshiba Satellite M35-S4561, but on my travels, I came across Acer's Travelmate 8006Lmi, which seems to have everything I want in a laptop. The only handicap is the price, so I'm not entirely sure I'll be purchasing it anyway, as it's about $300-$400 more expensive than the two I had my eye on.

Another option, which seems to be more firmly ensconced in in my price range, is the Acer Travelmate 8003. I was wondering whether this compares favorably enough to the Acer Aspire 2025 to warrant a second look.

From what I can see, the cons are that its HD is 20 GB slower and the speed is 1.6 compared to the Aspire's 1.8. One thing I wanted to verify, though: According to CNet reviews, the 8003 uses Dothan. Is this definite? Also, does a Intel

Someone else just posted Saturday that Acer may have discontinuted the Acer 2025 so you will have to see whether they have a new model on the website.

Some of the lower priced Acer Units have very small batteries (4 cell instead of 8 cell) making them useless as Pentium M notebooks as the battery life is similar to a Pentium 4M notebook as the battery capacity is cut in half. So check that carefully.

The Pentium M cpus with the 2mb L2 system cache (labeled with the numbering system 715 or higher -- the 705 is NOT a Dothan) will get you faster web page performance and other system performance as the L2 system cache is right on the cpu and is much faster than system RAM or the hard drive.

If you find a great deal on a Banias Pentium M (1mb L2 system cache) than you can consider that but it not the current generation of Pentium M. I have a Banias Pentium M 1.4 with 1mb L2 cache as I bought it just before the Dothans came out and it is fine for my uses but if I bought now I would get the Pentium M 1.6 Dothan 725 or above (it is not necessary to go higher than this cpu like the 1.8 745 unless it is a prebuilt and that is all you can get).

If you are insistent on 128mb dedicated video and the 7200rpm hard drive the Dell 8600 has both as an option but it is somewhat thicker and heavier (6.9 pounds versus Acer 6.6).

If you can live with 64mb dedicated video the HPZT3000/Compaq X1000 or Toshiba M35 series are better options. See X1000forums.com for all available discounts and specifications (they now have the XGA HPBriteview LCD as an option and they do have a 5400rpm hard drive option)
