Acer laptop getting slower and slower . . .

Basic Info: Acer aspire V5-571P, X64 base
Phys. mem: 3.8 gb; available phys. mem: 1.20 gb
Total virtual mem: 9.03 gb; Available vm: 4.64
C: = 500gb; free: 269gb

Startup speed is declining; command action taking longer, to the point of real aggravation. All requested functions to eventually operate as required, just slow to get started. Question: Where do I start in doing CPR on this possibly dying laptop.
