Acer Aspire One Laptop issue with shutdown

May 20, 2009 7:47AM PDT

Hello, and once again I hope you can help out a issue of my friend.

Specs:
Acer Aspire One ZG5
Intel Atoms 1.6 Ghz N270
RAM 1GB
HDD most likely a disk type, makes click when shutdown
Its a netbook, so there is NO CD/DVD DRIVE

So, the main issue is that the laptop shutdown strangely after boot and log in after a minute or more. Checking into safe mode, last known configuration, and diagnostic mode, all have failed and occurred the same affect as a normal boot up. Heating might be an issue I've read around because I hear no fan inside the laptop, but as well I've place a desk fan under the laptop (and it is still cool, even if there wasn't one).
The shutdown would be described like this: boot up, few minutes of activity, immediate shutdown with the clacking sound(hard drive?) turning off and no activity. I currently hear no fan (that silent or jammed?) and is cool.

My question: What could this issue be? Most likely hardware? Could I fix this issue without risking the warranty?

I'd like not take any dangerous risk with his permission because he never told me its onto warranty, and as well I've have not been provided with any recovery media (there is no way I can place a CD drive into it anyway).
Thank you for your help if solve it.

I have an Acer Aspire One

And used an external DVDRW to make the recovery media. Mine is still under warranty so my advice is to call it in and when it comes back to create the restore media just like the manual told us to.

That sound most logical...

however, this seems more hardware than software, which it would shutoff strangely without any triggering (For a few times, I manage to use the laptop for about 3-10 minutes before it shutoff strangely again). Battery is completely recharged, and even if it wasn't, the power supply will still kick in.

Sorry to hear that.

Our Aspire Ones are doing fine but if we had this trouble I would not think twice about getting it fixed for free.

Shut down issue...

There is a fan on the unit, it is small in size about an inch across. as far as the shutdown issue it might be the hard drive. some of these units came either with a flash hard drive or a standard sata drive. Check that.

Dust

I've had the exact problem with my Acer Aspire 8920. Thing was that fan was completely filled with dust so it could not function anymore. Solution was simple: take a screwdriver, open up your laptop and get rid of the dust and your laptop will function properly again.
