Question

Acer Aspire Cannot access safe mode - SOS

Oct 27, 2012 4:20AM PDT

Acer Aspire ZR7 model stuck on "Setup is starting services", never progresses.

I can't locate o/s discs et.al.

It willllllllll not open in safe mode using F8
I've also attempted Lft ALT + F10, no good
And, F12 at Windows screen. No good.

Any suggestions other than shooting it?

Answer
Why not order restore media.
Oct 27, 2012 4:27AM PDT

The story is too slim and details too little to guess this one. It could be damage to the OS (common) to some USB thing is plugged (rarer) but for now I find I can order restore media and in a pinch buy the full retail Windows or use Linux.

Restore media?
Oct 27, 2012 5:40AM PDT

I think the issue is damage to the os.

A slightly older laptop that was not shut down properly by my son (and I don't know what was happening that he felt the need to hard boot).

I've been playing with the keyboard since I 1st posted and managed to open command prompt and ran msconfig... (really don't know what I'm doing) from there I set the system to boot in safe mode, but it still gets hung up at "Setup is starting services".

However, I now can use F8 to get to "Advanced Boot Options". - but every option I've tried leads back to hanging up on "Setup is starting services".

Do you think media restore will help with this issue? And can I download to a different cd and utilize that way?

I'll try to explain it.

With these OEM, ready to use PCs the maker supplies a way to make restore media. If you elected or decided not to create them, you order them.

-> These makers have elected to use restore media rather than deal with repairing Windows. It's not popular and can upset those that know that the OS can be repaired.

- What is "Lft ALT + F10" supposed to do, and why is it no good? (and what is Lft?)
- And what is F12 at the Windows screen supposed to to and why is it not good/
- What are the Acer instructions to do a system recovery from the recovery partition?
- What were the Acer instructions to make your own recovery disks? And why didn't you make them?
- And why can't you locate the o/s disc(s) if they came with the machine?
- How much (USD) are the recovery disks at Acer customer service?

A little clarification re: F10 attempts et.al...
Oct 27, 2012 5:56AM PDT

These were suggestions that did not help from Acer's website to access system recovery options. Abbreviated they don't make sense - hold the left "Alt" button at the same time as F10 .

No, I did not create recovery discs and am apparently paying the price. Thought I may find a kind person to steer me toward what my options might be before I spend funds I really can't afford at this time.

Something like that might very well work to boot from the recovery partition if you press it at the right time, that is early during the boot repeatedly. On a Dell it's usually ctrl-F11, but an Acer isn't a Dell, of course.

Options at near zero cost.

Forget Windows. Go get Ubuntu and carry on.

The cost of recovery media is about 35 bucks on average and with Windows running over 100, it's a bargain. Of course making our own media is a few bucks but folk take the risk,.

-> Ask Acer if they have it for download (still going to cost for blank media) but here's Dell offering up Vista for THEIR MODELS!!! No, you can't use that! Ask Acer.
