Question

Acer Aspire 4830tg Fan/Overheating problems

Mar 23, 2015 7:48AM PDT

I realize this is a common problem with Aspire 4830tg's but I mine is slightly different. For a while now, my computer idle's at about 70-70c and shuts down from overheating a couple times a day. The fan had been making noise, so after much procrastination, I finally took the whole thing apart. I removed the fan, and sure enough it was clogged up with dust and what not. I cleaned the fan, lubed it up, and put everything back together. Sure enough, no fan noise anymore and idle temp went down to 35c. However, 5 hours later, it started making noises again and is back to 75c idle.

Does anyone have any ideas? I'm now thinking maybe the fan is okay but somehow it eventually gets destructive vibrations that causes it to malfunction. I really don't know tho, any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Answer
Did you replace the compound?

And if the fan is noisy, it's in need of cleaning or replacement. Sometimes you get clients that wish hardware would last forever.

As I said in the post, I completely cleaned and lubed the fan and it worked beautifully for 5 hours. After it stopped working again I took everything apart again and checked the fan.... it was still clean and spun great. Tested fan externally with 5 volts and works fine.

What is the "compound"?

I hear ya on the client's hardware wishes... don't do that work anymore but I understand. Everything is clean inside. Also, after I initially cleaned and lubed fan I did stress tests and everything was in good shape.

Thank you Bob I appreciate your help.

What you find on google with this: Heatsink Compound.

There are numerous Youtube videos on replacing this so I don't write how anymore.

As to the fan, again, if it's noisy, then it may be time.
