ACER 5742 laptop Core i5 (windows 7) - boot up issues!

Any suggestions please, for the following annoying problem?

I've have just bought the above laptop and have discovered that when I try to boot it up using the battery power only (fully charged), the on switch lights up up and the fan operates, but the screen remains blank and the hard drive activity indicator light remains off. Eventually the laptop switches itself off...
It's fine when plugged into the mains power.

Is there an easy fix or should I return it to the shop??

The advice is go right back and exchange it. No reason to accept a defect right out of the box.
