Acer 1710 notebook

Have had sudden onset of a problem with the display on my laptop and wondered if there are any thoughts on this.
Screen has suddenly started to move randomly to various shades of darkness, although it is still visible. It sometimes flicks very briefly to normal brightness, but only very briefly.
Any thoughts about what may be wrong?
