General discussion

access to portfolio

Jul 23, 2004 12:13AM PDT

I have windows me and was making a finacial transaction (selling all my mutual funds at one instution). When I completed the transaction it left a cash bal of -0- (which is correct) but a portfolio bal of .01. When I tried to go back to the list of accounts, it popped up a notice saying Microsoft had created an error MSOFD.DLL and to restart the computer. This did not work. I then tried to get rid of the .01 bal by by changing the price (very slightly)in a transaction to change it by .01. That changed the transaction by .01, but the bal stayed .01. I then tried to enter a fake purchase (an even $ amount). Now the bal was ".02" higher. I suspect this is what is preventing me from getting back to the portfolio. Also when I click investing, then click portfolio, the notice pops up. All other areas work fine. I would be thankful for any help.

What software is this?
Jul 23, 2004 12:32AM PDT

Besides it being all in one paragraph (tough to read), the post seems to not mention any application that was used.

So far, we have...

1. The OS = Windows ME.
2. Some error message about MSOFD.DLL, but it's not in "quotes" and appears to have a typographic error.

Fill in some blanks.

This Google http://www.google.com/search?&q=MSOFD.DLL seems to note that Microsoft Money was at issue, but I'll leave it to you to see if one of those articles apply.

Bob, Thanks for taking the time. Sorry the info is a little muddled. You no doubt know by now my computer knowledge is quite limited.

The computer was built locally, so all parts are not the same brand. It is Windows me and shows Windows 2001 when MS Money is opened.

In my portfolio, I have accounts in different financial insitutions. I sold both mutual funds, I had in one insitution, which should have left a bal of -0-. It left a bal of .01, which I cannot make go away, nor can I return from the transaction page to the portfolio. It also does not work to restart the computer-ck MS Money-ck investing then when I ck portfolio, I get the message "Microsoft has commited an error. MSOFD.DLL.(I rechecked these letters) try restarting your computer."

Thanks, if you can help more. If not Thanks very much for the time you have already taken!

Looks like a new, never seen before error.

"Microsoft has commited an error." is one I've never seen.

You'll have to call them and ask if there is some unpublished information about it.

Sorry about that.

Just on the off chance that it makes a difference, I checked again and will give you the exact wording of the whole message.

Ms has caused an error
Ms money will now close
if you continue to experence problems try restarting your computer.

I`ll follow your advise and give MS a call. Thanks again!

The error message is important.
Jul 23, 2004 1:59PM PDT

When you call in, if you can't relay the error message, your call may seem to go nowhere. I know that MS Money will emit some error about the DLL noted, but was hoping you could supply the error message without a typo.

Again, http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&q=%22Ms+has+caused+an+error%22 has zero reports of such a message. Checking Google groups find 1 hit, but it's Microsoft Word.

As it stands, the first link I supplied about the DLL in question likely has your answer. But without an accurate error message for me to narrow it down, I leave it to you to figure it out.

Sorry, but that's how it goes sometimes.

At the risk of becoming a pest, I will try to get it right this time.

Msmoney has caused an error in MSOFD.DLL.
Msmoney will now close.
if you continue to experience problems,
try restarting your computer.

If you feel you have already spent too much time on this problem, I understand. Thanks again

Where it says "if you continue", the i in if should be a capital I.

That's better (and capitals don't count.)

This Google Groups search lists the common reasons an about the third discussion is WINDOWS ME in the brew.

The solutions are far too many so you may scream, but you need to review what others have done. The ones that mention Windows ME are the most likely and should rise to the top of possible fixes.

The one that I may take a bet on, involved a recent PRINTER INSTALL that installed a newer/older .DLL

--> Second thoughts.

While http://support.microsoft.com/?id=314136 at first may not seem to apply, the RAGING ISSUES with PARASITES and that almost everyone is finding SPYWARE on their machines (a link about that in a moment) makes me ask what you are doing to keep the pests out. Hint: Norton is not an acceptable answer.

Light reading about parasites is at http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/

Since MSMONEY is tied in with IE, any pest in IE can telegraph failures to MSMONEY.

Sadly, I don't see any "do-this" cure.

I have experienced this same problem. While in the "Investing" Money window I got the error message "Msmoney has caused an error in PFCPLANS.DLL..." and when I went to the "Reports" window I got a "msmoney has caused an error in MSOFD.DLL...." I got some suggestions from Gateway and did a Money uninstall/reinstall and backup and had the same problem again. I then installed an older backup and when I tried working on "investments" again I got the same PFCPLANS.DLL message. So, I reinstalled the older backup again and am not going to work with that one line item in "Investing". As if any of this makes sense.

Glad to see I'm not alone.
Windows ME, MS Money 2001 and both those error messages have been haunting me for 3 years. Only in Investing and only when I "really" need to do something. I have discovered that if you...one by one...inactivate your investment accounts the program will work. Problem is circular. You need to disable the accounts you want to work with in order for the program to work with those kind of accounts. I have also discovered after much cursing that on occasion, very rarely, it will work just fine.
Need a super-geek to solve this one.

Thank you for that info. I think, if I get really brave some day, I may try your suggestions although I don't understand the logic. In any case, we're back on top.

Some day we may get help.
