Access to files denied

May 28, 2005 2:48AM PDT

I recently had to re-install Windows XP, since when a number of folders and individual files
on my computer have become inaccessible. When I try to open them I get a message "Access is denied" or "WORD cannot open the document: user does not have access privileges." The file are either Word documents od jpeg. Can anyone out there tell me how to get at my data again, please.

Frederick

Thanks for your help

I thought it was a question of ownership, but I didn't know what to do about it. Problem now fixed, thanks to you! I had already tried Microsoft and the maker of my computer on which WP was pre-installed, but, of course, the buck was passed to and fro. I should have trien CNET first.

Thanks again,

Frederick

trying to take ownership
Jun 11, 2005 4:00PM PDT

I have a similar problem - I have taken the hard drive of one PC and put it into another as a second drive (the original PC packed up!) now I cannot access the files. I followed the instruction for taking ownership but never got the message:

You do not have permission to read the contents of directory folder name. Do you want to replace the directory permissions with permissions granting you Full Control?

All permissions will be replaced if you press Yes.

It just seemed to go over and change permissions, but when i try and access the files again, they are still marked in green and access is denied.

Please help, i'm getting desperate!
Estelle
