Question

Access Point not working

Oct 16, 2016 8:27AM PDT

I have an old pc running windows XP home edition and is a cisnet pc. It does not have wifi capability and I want Internet on it. So I found an access point lying around (TPLink Wireless lite n access point TL-WA701ND v1 not v2) and set it up as a connector according to the manual. My wifi type wpa and I set up the router to access it with the network password. However the router is not working. My home router is on the ground floor of the house and the access point is on the second floor. I'm guessing the access point is to far away from the router because in the manual it said the preferred location of the access point is to be right next to the home router. Anyways, how do I fix this problem and if it's not possible without moving the access point what are other ways I can give Internet access to my old pc other than installing a wifi card

What are other ways I can get wifi to a computer without wifi capabilities and excluding wifi cards and wifi adapters

If anyone could answer that question,

they would be sitting on a fortune.

You want a computer, that does not already have WiFi capabilities, to receive a WiFi signal BUT, you do not want to give that computer the ability to receive a WiFi signal.

Even the method you have been trying below is NOT WiFi, it is Wired Ethernet.

Might save yourself a whole bunch of hassle if you just ran an ethernet cable from the Home Router to the XP box on the second floor. You don't have to run it through the house, you could go up the outside wall of the building.

Did you plug the wireless directly to a LAN port on the main router? When it was given an IP address, were you able to access it? Did you try accessing it direct from your computer to a LAN port on the access point and set it up BEFORE plugging to the router, hopefully with a static IP address? Did you then access the main router internal program and assign that static IP address to the wireless access device? Are you sure the wireless function in the wireless access device is turned on? Doesn't this require a cable between it and the main router so it can work with wireless equipment? I only see the one antenna on it.

How to configure TL-WA701ND V2, TL-WA801ND V2, or TL-WA901ND V3 as an Access Point

The topology below shows how the access point works:

Note:
1. To work as an access point, these devices are ‘plug and play’.

I plugged in the access point to the computer using an Ethernet cable and set up the access point. I did not go to the main router and gave it a static ip
