Question

Access hd drive via LG tv

Jul 15, 2017 3:39AM PDT

I have a usb hard drive connected to an LG 32LN575V TV (built in wi-fi). I want to be able to copy (not stream) files to the drive from my computer (osx) while the drive remains connected to the TV. Is this possible - either using the computer or the TV? Or is a NAS/wifi hd dock (connected via usb to the TV) the only solution?

No TV I know shares the HDD (NAS like) so you'll need a NAS to get there. Most folk tinker with this for a time and move to a HTPC in the end. I used one of our older laptops (2009 Sony Vaio with core2duo) to be a HTPC. Works great.

other alternative

I have an old laptop, that's my fall back solution. However the LG actually has a great media centre interface (and of course remote control to control it) its just the networking side of the lg is very confusing as there seems to be three different network configuration types (file-sharing, wireless speakers etc.). I've also tried the router/nas trick (https://www.cnet.com/uk/how-to/how-to-set-up-a-networked-hard-drive-with-a-mac/) which i can see from a laptop but no idea weather it can be seen from the lg or how to go about that.

Just so you know.

Many try to use the "Smart TV" as you are doing and it takes time to learn what a mess they are. This works, that doesn't and in the end it's your choice how to get to where you are going.

I did try another HTPC based on an Intel NUC but it wasn't quite there for smooth 1080p playback so I'm back to my old laptop and I'm where I want to be. For reasons I can only guess, the smart TV is not going to do all we want.
