The HP/Compaq A/C bricks get much hotter when you are BOTH using the notebook AND charging the battery.
I have a Pentium M Compaq X1000/HPZT3000 which runs much cooler than your Compaq R3000 but it is the same issue.
If you have to charge it while using it just make sure you have the A/C brick in a well ventilated area (preferably on a hard surface not the carpet) and make sure the A/C cord is not crimped.
If you can charge the battery when you are not using the notebook this is preferable and you will notice a pronounced difference in the heat of the A/C brick when you are doing one or the other but not both functions at once.
You can confirm this at R3000forums.com --your dedicated user forum.
hey guys
i have a quick Q.
i have a compaq r3000z. new. i use it like crazy.
more often than not, when i charge the battery in this thing, the power adaptor "brick" gets real hot. for instance now it is real hot. I usually stop charging when my battery is full and plug it in when i reach my critical level which i have set to 20%.
