Question

AC Power adapter error message

Mar 17, 2018 8:00AM PDT

When I reboot my computer, I get an error message stating: "The AC power adapter wattage and type cannot be determined. The battery may not charge. The system will adjust the performance to match the power available. Please connect a Dell 45 W AC adapter or greater for the best system performance." When I click on my power option icon it shows "30% available (plugged in, not charging)

Does this mean that my power chord is malfunctioning? Or is there possibly another issue?

Answer
It's either the charger, connection or

Older battery or a failing motherboard.

Because of battery fires many makers implemented a smarter battery and charger system to lock out clone or incorrect charger use.

Do you have the Dell charger? I find most often it's just the wrong charger over the other issues.

AC power adapter error

I am using the original Dell charger which came with my Dell Inspiron 5555, purchased 08/2016.

This changes my advice.

It might be in warranty. Some folk get the extended warranty so use that.

If not, the most common cause I run into is still bad power adapters and jacks. You would know if the power jack was subjected to stress by moving the laptop while plugged in, an inadvertent pull or other event.

To figure out which you have to try another charger almost every time.
