About to give up

Sep 21, 2004 8:43PM PDT

I am trying to connect to XP computers. I have Road Runner cable modem(Toshiba PCX1100u) the cable modem is connected via USB, and has an ethernet port. I have tried the Linksys (wireless), D-Link DI-604, and the Netgear RP614 broadband routers. I have brand new cables and crossover cables as well. No matter what connections I try. I cannot get these 2 computers to connect. I have tried using the nic cards connections.
The routers will say that I have WAN access, but neither computer shows up or have internet access. My ultimate goal is to have the 2 computers (on different floors - that is why I tried the wireless), and an xbox connected(this is why I purchased the D-link) plus one lap top.

The usual is that the installer has ZoneAlarm or such installed and ... its working.

No I had no such utility running. As a matter of fact to make sure both computers were on the exact same level in terms of software. I reformatted both computers, and only had XP running. Nothing else was installed, not even the upgrades.

"the cable modem is connected via USB, and has an ethernet port."

From this statement the physical layout of your network is unclear.

Try connecting the modem to the routers WAN port via a straight thru CAT5 ethernet cable. Then the PCs to the rest of the LAN ports on the router.
