If I live in New York, and I took a trip to Florida, would I still get connected to the internet using my notebook?

I picked up a Wifi card for my laptop and connected at various shops, hotels, airports, libraries for free.

From 8 to 50 bucks.

hopefully you have a built in minipci wi-fi card already

If you bought your notebook in 2003 or 2004 and it cost over $1,000 hopefully you already have a minipci wi-fi card built in.

As bob says, if there are free hotspots available in public places or hotels your wi-fi card will pick them up and you can log in. If they require a password (like at Starbucks with Tmobile) you cannot log into these for free.
