About Nero

Apr 20, 2005 1:25PM PDT

download.com has a brand new version, released today and is quite pricey. I highly doubt the trial will be very beneficial due to past experiences with free trials. Is there an older, free version that will work with DVD Shrink, or has Nero always been pay software?

Why is this needed?

With shrink doing what it does and writing tools such as CDBurnerXP and DVDdecrypter, why would one need Nero?

Now extremely frustrated

I've checked out Shrink, downloaded Nero because that seems to come up in all the tutorials, and I keep getting the same error every time. Rob is right, that probably was unnecessary and I know that because Nero recognizes the file no better than anything else does. It will support pretty much every format possible except the avi that I downloaded.

I don't have a DVD I want to rip or copy. I have no need to backup an existing DVD. I downloaded a simple avi file and Roxio couldn't fit it onto a 4.7 DVD-R. I don't need a walkthrough at this point, nor a tutorial. Why isn't Shrink recognizing my file? That's all I ask. If anyone knows I would greatly appreciate the help.

Why Shrink Isn't Recognizing

Your AVI file has to be converted to a DVD format. There are programs that will do that. Do a Google and you will find some programs that will do this conversion. After the conversion, then you would use Shrink to make the file small enough to fit on one DVD.

Wow, thanks!

Now we're getting somewhere. I've googled for about 20 minutes and can't find any examples of a correct format. Do you know one which best suites Shrink? I'll keep searching of course, but my headache isn't getting any smaller. Thanks again for the reply!

http://www.flydragonsoft.com/avi-mpeg-converter.htm

this is what i've used...it has worked every time...i usually use it to put all of my comical and humorous AVIs onto DVD to show friends...

if it doesn't interest you then just search for something that will convert avi to mpeg that does please you.

AVI to DVD

That is not what Shrink or Decrypter does. I strongly advise against Nero for this project.

Here's what I use.

1. DVDSANTA. Cheap. Works.

2. Ulead DVD MovieFactory. Not as cheap, works and you can do more with it.

3. Shrink. If the DVD created with items 1 or 2 do not play well I let Shrink duplicate it. I have found it can fix issues or mistakes by the above software.

mtrx- Interests me? Shoot, I'd probably download www.thisisavirus.exe if I was told it would work at this point. Happy

rob- I got rid of Nero a few hours ago. Would Shrink at least help me chop enough off to fit onto a DVD-R, or is it simply a program designed to rip original DVDs?

Could work.

But here's the hoop I jumped through.

Hoop 1 -> Created it on a double layer DVD then used DVD Shrink to make it fit.

Hoop 2 -> Used Ulead DVD Moviefactory and cut the quality down one notch.
