About Ewido Micro Scanner...

by maggiea43 / October 22, 2007 8:01 AM PDT

I was just looking through the forums and came across a post from Donna and she posted a link to Ewido. Of course I went directly to it and I have it running as we speak! My question is, is this really Ewido, or is it really AVG. I've always loved Ewido, and hated to see it go. I've never really warmed up to AVG AS. Maybe it's the icon? .....Maggie

Ewido vs AVG AS
by Carol~ Forum moderator / October 22, 2007 8:31 AM PDT

Maggie..

The press release from last year should explain it. As per Vinzenz Ewido at the time, "This means the company ewido network was accquired by Grisoft, not only our technology. So we're now part of Grisoft, but the product ewido anti-malware will still exist and the development will be continued.".

Antivirus Specialist GRISOFT Acquires Anti-malware Expert Ewido Networks

i' Brno, Czech Republic and Millburn, N.J. - April 19, 2006 - GRISOFT, the maker of award-winning AVG Anti-Virus, today announced the acquisition of Ewido Networks, a leading provider of innovative anti-malware solutions. This acquisition expands GRISOFT's AVG antivirus and firewall offerings to include comprehensive malware protection, and provide its customers with the highest level of security against growing types of malicious software spreading across the Internet' There's more in the above hyperlink.

As far as the "E" icon is concerned, you can still get it on your desktop, if it's going make you feel any better. Wink Just give a shout.

jh..

I'm not sure if you're referring to the "e" or the orange symbol. The "e" may no longer be available. I still have it saved in an "icon folder" and can't find it on web. If you mean the orange symbol, which is the same as the avatar next to Karl Ewido's name, Maggie got it when she installed the micro-scanner. Which one were you referring to? If it's the orange, and you don't know how to change it, I can explain it. If it's the "e", as I said I doubt it's still available. I may be wrong.

I was referring to the "e" icon. But since it is no longer available, I downloaded the Ediwdo anti-spyware micro scanner and got the orange symbol from it.

Thanks Maggie and Carol.

AVG Anti spyware is dead

AVG Anti spyware support will end this year. That's why you should continue using Ewido. Too bad it doesn't have a "right-click-scan" option and a protection option. The best alternative for that is MalwareBytes anti malware.

Ewido is now dead ;)

and was taken over by Grisoft and renamed to AVG Antispyware. That too is now being phased out and replaced by the new AVG 8.0 which now includes antispyware and antivirus features. There still is a Free version.

So there is no confusion. Grin

AVG Anti-spyware will not be available anymore as stand alone tool. While Ewido Micro Scanner will continue to update using Ewido's servers and can be used as stand alone tool.

I really thought an experienced (and valued) member like you could find it with google as easy as I did. http://www.ewido.net/en/onlinescan/ is the first hit for EWIDO MICRO SCANNER.

But I must say it doesn't mention anything about end of support dates. Everything you click on except the very last line (the download link) goes to AVG 8.0

I had Google it and found exactly what you found. It looked so much like AVG that unlike you, I didn't read as far as the last line.

Thanks for pointing the way.
