About BackWeb client

Dec 11, 2004 10:08PM PST

Hi, yesterday my spyware program (XoftSpy)came up with BackWeb client as spyware for the first time (after installing an update) and I deleted it. So now every time I start up the computer I get this error notice saying that "c:\Program files\BackWeb client\6.2.3.66\program/BackWeb.dll" can't be loaded. I haven't noticed any strange computer behavior because of this. However, the popup is annoying and I'm wondering how can I get rid of it?
Thanks for your help!

Hi Hella
Backweb is a software program that is sometimes used by BOTH legitimate companies and some malware installers which is why SOME of the spyware detectors report it. HP/Compaq/Logitech , among others also use it. If you have one of those, does Xoftspy have any kind of recovery system? BTW Xoftspy was on Eric Howes rogue anti-spyware list but they have supposedly changed their practices lately. You can read about that on this link. Scroll down to Xoftspy and click where it says "Note". Even though it is no longer considered rogue, it is also NOT on the trusted list.

I had a similar kind of issue a couple of weeks ago and, as I understand it, others have recently had incidents like yours.

Via questioning in these forums (I think I posted in the virus sub-category, but I'm not sure) and looking around myself I discovered what roddy has said.

Well because BackWeb is needed by a lot of legit operations I decided to leave it be and trust Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware SE to pick up any possible nasty usage.

To resolve your immediate issue ... I am no expert, but try doing a "system restore" to before you modified things, though then your antispyware will prompt you again I suppose, which may be just as annoying as the pop-up you have now, but maybe you can configure the program to ignore that particular problem, if you establish that it is harmless.

Can't help you with that, but I daresay someone else will.

Thank you very much for your quick answers, Roddy and Keyhoti.
I did the system restore and the popup disappeared. I can live with BackWeb showing up in the scan. I'll ignore it from now on. I have it blocked in my firewall.
About XoftSpy: I am very surprised to hear that about them, Roddy. I clicked on the link you posted and read everything. I only installed it after reading a glowing recommendation in a computer forum. Then I read a review and it was all favorable. Same with Spywareblaster. I installed that as well after reading the review of it. So far I've had no problems with either one of them. I also have Ad-Aware SE.
Anyway, I appreciate your help
Hella

You are welcome Hella. Most programs have an "ignore" function or an "exclude" function for items that you don't want reported every time. You might check to see if XoftSpy has that option if you are going to still use it. SpywareBlaster is an excellent product and if you have not clicked on the update function lately, there were 36 new defs made available on Saturday. Don't forget to click on "enable" after they are downloaded.
