Abercrombie & Fitch cancels racy catalog

Dec 11, 2003 7:56AM PST

[I}NEW YORK (CNN/Money) -- Apparel giant Abercrombie & Fitch, under fire from some consumer groups for its racy catalogs, said Tuesday it would stop issuing them and halt publication of its controversial holiday issue.

The company's 280-page holiday book included nude young adult models in highly suggestive poses, as well as articles on sex -- elements apparently intended to boost the clothing retailer's brand among college-age customers.

The market target for the company is to pre-teens and teens.

I was in one of their stores with my then-15 year-old granddaughter. They had some cute things, but stuff like cut-off jeans with ragged edges for $48 is ridiculous.

I object to ALL of the news stories I have seen identifying those who question the suitability of the catalog for youngsters as "conservative", as if they are the only ones who feel it is not appropriate.

Let's let kids be kids and wait for the grown-up stuff at least a little longer is my take. I know they are "in the know", but hard for them to tell reality from fantasy.

and we should now applaud them?

Having carried their marketing of teen porn to unacceptable levels, they probably think they should now be applauded for pulling the latest gambit back!

It's far too late for Abercrombie to have any credibility on this issue.

Hi, Angeline.

I agree with you until the last paragraph. The problem is that thanks to the blue-nose conservatives that insist on "abstinence-only" sex education, and even object to adolescents having access to accurate information For example, see City Pulls Controversial Link From Library Site. The site in question, http://www.alice.columbia.edu/, is Columbia University's health information service for teens, and is "sexually explicit" only in that it doesn't pretend that babies come from storks.

Democrat Mayor Lee P. Brown is a bluenose Dave?
Dec 11, 2003 7:11PM PST

LOL, can't help but point out that he served in Clinton's cabinet so ......

Anyway, you linked to the general health services website of Columbia U. Here is Go Ask Alice

It is directed at college age young adults, Dave, not teenagers. Some pretty explicit stuff there.

Hi, Evie.

Brown was acting due to inflammatory statements by conservative Council members. In particular, defeated mayoral candidate Micahel Berry was on the tube last night saying the egregious error in judgement by making this link available to "children" (it was in the adult section, so you had to be in at least Jr. High to gain access) suggested the need for "new leadership" at the library... These are the same folks who try to get "Our Bodies, Ourselves" banned from the library.
