Abandon Ship - do not install iTunes ver 7!!!

Sep 12, 2006 7:17AM PDT

When I tried to install it took soooooo loooong

After the install none of the icons worked

Afther hunting around and starting the .exe myself it would play no music and no podcasts.

Went to a prior restore point with the OS (Win XP) and now ver 6 does not work

Tried to reinstall ver 6 ane the install hosed!

tried to execute ver 6 anyway but it said it needed quicktime

tried to reinstall quicktime and the install hosed!

It is time for the full wrath of all BOL

Both Tom, Molly and yes even V.

Apple just made all my on-line purchased music worthless, and the only way to hear the podcast is through the web!

I installed the new iTunes immediately after release this afternoon on both my PC and my Macbook and it works great. No problems.

I have gone back to a restore point in windows

I have tried to reinstall ver 6 about 6 times

I have had to try to reinstall quicktime at least 4 times

I finally got ver 6 to reload and all the music and posdcasts were gone!

I will have to work on this more later.

If Tom was mad at what he just went through - this trumps all of that!

Forget me buying any of those cute little new iPods for my grandaughters now!

What I finally had to do to get everything back
Sep 12, 2006 9:13AM PDT

After reinstalling ver 6 of iTunes, it complained that the iTunes Library file was created by a later version. In Skype chat, Santiago recommended going back to the backup that the install of ver 7 should have created.

I tried that but it didn't work.

However I had a backup of BOTH of the iTunes Library files on a file server (of sorts) I use just for backups. After copying BOTH of the iTunes Library files down from the file server backup location I have all my music back (as of the last backup) and all my subscriptions to the podcasts.

Now all I need to do is check the music against my download records to make sure I have it all and update the podcasts and I am back to where I was before all this started.

Spoke too soon!

Now the old iTunes does not play anyting either.

This is what caused me to go back to ver. 6.

I click on a song or a podcast, and hit the play button and it just sits there.

*SIGH*

I re re downloaded Quicktime and now it works again

I'm not trying iTunes 7 until I have to.

Try this
Sep 13, 2006 6:12AM PDT

check My Documents/My Music/iTunes/Previous iTunes Libraries

That should contain the file for your old ver6 library, just use it to overwrite the one created by ver7, then when you run 6 it should have your old library there. Don't quote me though cuz i chose the other route, i fiddled with ver7 until it worked. Lowered my quicktime settings to 16-bit instead of 24-bit, but now here is the really annoying thing. When MSN Messenger makes a sound for an alert, iTunes starts gettin garbled again, if i hit pause for about 2 seconds and start playing again its fine....what a pain.

Hate to say it, but it installed just fine and is playing everything normally. Did take forever to look for album art but after that has worked swimmigly (knock wood).

Installed on my Mac Mini pretty quick. I can flip through the titles OK but still can't get album art. I even broke down and established an account just so I could get the art. Do I need to donate blood, too?

Sep 12, 2006 9:11AM PDT

I can't even install it on 2 different machines. It gives me an error pointing to a registry error and asks if I have the proper rights. I seems to be a problem with QT 7.1.3. ARRGGGHHHHHH! How am I supposed to listen to Veronica makes excuses as why still no wide screen ipod, or iphone or how great the name iTV is?

Who is crazy enough to spend $800 on a series 3 when most cable providers include a DVR these days? For that much money, I'll somehow find a way to survive without a TiVo feature or two (PS Replay TV was always better). TiVo is the walking dead.

why are you declaring it dead already?

HDMI, dual cablecards, I wouldn't rush into declaring it dead, give it a little time to agonize at least

My thoughts
Sep 13, 2006 6:59AM PDT

To be honest, I thought Tivo was dead a couple of years ago and then they managed to breathe some life back into their company for a while.

But honestly, with Media Centers and the impending Mac iTV (or whatever the name ends up being) and cable companies giving away HD capable DVRs with the service (I DVR HD-quality stuff all the time) unless they get some sort of Comcast or Time-Warner partnership again, they're really pretty much gone.

Admittedly, my Comcast (now Time-Warner) DVR SUCKS and I would prefer the Tivo but is it really hundreds of dollars more to gain an added convenient feature or two? Not really and I'm pretty sure that most consumers feel the same way.

Audio Playback Problems
Sep 12, 2006 9:41AM PDT

The new iTunes and Quicktime installed without a problem, but when I started iTunes 7 and tried to playback audio only podcasts, ALL of them were garbled! AAC, MP3... the format doesn't seem to matter. Every audio podcast I have in iTunes plays back garbled, and downloading them again doesn't change the outcome. Video podcasts playback fine, although the audio volume was all over the place.

Buzz Out Loud plays back fine from the web page, but from within iTunes it's gone to hell.

iTunes 7 and 5G v1.2 installed without problems. Actually like the new iTunes. However, when I try to play any of my downloaded (and I tried re-downloading) BOL 'casts, my iPod REBOOTS! What's up with that?!? Anyone else have this issue?

BOL reboots my Ipod Too

Same thing here - when I try to play today's episode or Cnet Daily news, my ipod reboots. I'm able to play some podcasts but not Buzz Out Loud.

other CNET podcasts have rebooted my iPod too
Sep 13, 2006 10:51AM PDT

I can't start a BOL without getting a reboot and after listening to a Security Bites it rebooted right at the end. I'm lucky enough to have a shuffle so will settle on that til I can do a backup and restore. Worst case I'm returning the darn thing and getting a refund and will buy another mp3 player. This is a huge disappointment. Sad

Problem solved
Sep 12, 2006 2:29PM PDT

After reading around the web about this problem, I finally came across a post that fixed my problem.

Basically, I had to adjust the audio output settings in QuickTime. Under QuickTime Preferences, I clicked the Audio tab and set the rate to 96 KHz and size to 16 bit (I have a Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeMusic card). After clicking the Apply button, I restarted iTunes and my audio files played correctly.

Other people report getting different settings to work on different cards. Just be sure to apply, then quit and restart iTunes for the changes to kick in.

How I fixed iTunes 7.0.1 playback problem... Easy!
Oct 3, 2006 10:50PM PDT

Using a USB headset for playback? Hearing garbled playback for the first time *ever* since you installed iTunes 7.0?

Don't fret. Unplug the USB headset, then plug it into another USB port. Windows XP will see the headphones again, load the drivers, and clear up the garble.

Least it did for me. This was the very first time I'd ever had playback problems with these great headphones or the playback drivers for 'em -- but unplugging and plugging back in fixed it with no other tweaks needed.

My experience (Win XP)
Sep 12, 2006 9:42AM PDT

I felt like tempting fate today. After reading about the horrors that have already befallen many today, I tried installing iTunes 7. Installation went without a hitch (although I prefer not to wat the progress bar fill itself 20 times during an intall).
I then started iTunes, and everything seemed peachy as it sat there "Calculating Gapless Playback Information" or whatever it wanted to do. I left the room, came back, and found a wonderful little blue screen waiting for me. Fearful and slightly frustrated, I rebooted. Tried running the app again and it's working rather swimmingly.

Don't know what happened, but now it seems fine, so I don't care all that much.

Good luck to the rest of you.
