A strange thing happened!!!!!

Feb 4, 2004 11:08AM PST

THIS PROBLEM IS ONLY HAPPENING IN IE. This afternoon I was browsing a website and all of a sudden when I right clicked on things it was in a foreign language. I checked all of my computer settings and all say english and I confirmed all settings by comparing it to my other computer. I tried to restore yesterday and that seemed to work except now when I right click I get nothing. The language seems to be Dutch or swedish or something like that..... Some of the letters have the double dots above some letters. HELP!!!!!!

I am running Windows XP pro on a Toshiba laptop. 512m memory Celeron 2.something .....

Thanks
Brett

What were you trying to do right clicking ? What was in a foreign language--what was "it" ? The drop down menu ? A pop-up window ? A new window ?

"All the words were there..."
Once again, where is there ?
In the meantime, I can only suggest that you try the anti-parasites suite mentioned here .

OK. DO try out that anti-parasite suite. A lot of 'strange' problems have been solved by running even only one.

Last Resort !
Feb 4, 2004 3:59PM PST

I have been trying to find out what happened through my questions and your responses. Now, we may never know. There are two ways to solve the problem: (1) Use System Restore, or (2) Go into safe mode and choose 'Last good configuaration...'.

Good Luck !

Part I.

1. Click Start, All Files and Folders, More Advanced Options, enter a check in Search Hidden Files and Folders, Search System Folders, and Search Subfolders. Type ie.inf in All or Part of the File Name box, select C: in the Look In drop-down menu or the letter of the hard drive containing the Windows folder, and then click the Search button. Find the file labeled ie.inf in the result pane. Right-click this file and then from the context menu, select Install.

2. The article [Q304872] states that when you try to install Internet Explorer 6 on a computer that is running Windows XP, you may receive an error message that can occur if Internet Explorer 6 has already been installed and the installation package does not contain any new customizations -- a customized versions of Internet Explorer 6 that was created by an Internet service provider, Internet content provider, or a corporate administrator that is installed instead of the default browser.

3. The article [Q309383] warns and provides steps for working around a problem that when you try to install an Internet Explorer 6 customized-media package, the installation may not work and you may receive an error message that may occur if the Install.ins file that was created by Internet Explorer Administration Kit (IEAK) version 6 Wizard contains an undefined "Company Name" value.

The article [Q310747] discusses and describes the Beta release of System File Checker (Sfc.exe), a command-line tool that examines protected system files and restores the correct versions by using backups stored in the Dllcache folder or files copied from the operating system CD. Protected files include those with .sys, .dll, .exe, .ttf, .fon and .ocx file name extensions. Due to disk space considerations, storing all protected files in the Dllcache folder might not be practical especially on computers with limited storage space. Therefore, the system may require and prompt for the operating system CD. In addition, SFC can be used to repopulate the %Systemroot%\System32\Dllcache folder if the contents become damaged or unusable.

I did an sfc earlier and no luck...... I also did what you suggested in part I and that did not work either.......
Right now I get no pop up box but can highlight and go to edit and copy etc.... very annoying..... Also I notice that my DEL button will not delete things..... I so hate to redo my system..... Is there a way to totally uninstall IE and then reinstall?

I should have said I did all that already.... I did the registry stuff....... At this point I am lost as to what to do...... Though the registry was changed the folder still exists...... Also I ran SFC and it did whatever and nothing changed there either.

1. So, you actually performed the repair or reinstall of Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows XP as explained in the article, [How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows XP] at the paragraph labeled, Method 1: Reinstall or Repair Windows XP, where you would have proceeded to through the references already provided?

2. If you have and that didn't fix the problem with IE, then I have nothing further to add. Sorry.
