A simple 20G+ QUALITY mp3 player (no video needed)

May 14, 2009 9:17PM PDT

Hi all! First, Im sorry that my english isn't better.

About 5 years ago or so, I bought my beautiful Sony NW-HD5. It has worked perfectly all these years. It's soundquality is great (better than Ipod), and it has a 40 hr battery time and 20G's of space. The only problem is that it's a bit big (about 3,5"x2.5"x0.5") or (8.5cmx6cmx1cm)
A few weeks ago, I made the mistake of bringing my mp3 player to the gym, and happened to drop a dumbell on it Sad The screen broke, but the player still works though! (thats quality!) The problem is that you cant see anything so you cant choose songs etc.

Now, I am looking for a new old school mp3 player. No flashy **** with big screens and mp4/mpeg/whatever support, but just a mp3 player. Conditions are as follows:'
1. Has to have GREAT sound quality and nice bass.
2. Atleast 25-30 hrs of battery time and 20Gs of space is minimum.
3. QUALITY, I mistreated my Sony player badly during these years and it never failed me. No problems with that "input headphones hole" (you know when you press the headphone socket to one direction and the sound on one side dissapears etc)
4. Size! It has to be small! Not like super small, but atleast so small that you can put it in your pocket without it bothering you. And like I said, I need no big screens and video support! Only music support.

Any sugestions?

Thanks allot in advance!

That's a tough one...

It's going to be difficult to find a modern player with your specifications, namely without video. Pretty much all players, at least the name brand, ones are doing it across the spectrum of their capacities. Unless you want a simple stick or clip model with low capacity (in the 1 to 4GB range) they pretty much all have video. Just don't use it and you'll get better battery run time.

You didn't specify price as important, so I'm going to point you to 2 high capacity flash based players - the Samsung P3 and The Sony X-Series Walkman. Both come in 32GB capacities. The next lower capacity for both of these is 16GB. I'll include the links to the reviews on CNET. They were both recently mentioned on CNET's MP3 Insider Podcast as having really good sound quality.

Samsung P3 (haven't seen it for sale in the US yet):

Sony X-Series Walkman (not out yet, scheduled for release next month):

I agree

DAPs from the major manufacturers are hard if not impossible to find nowadays; everyone's tossing video in their large cap devices and turning out PMPs instead.

I also agree with ktreb's recommendations; both the Samsung P3 and Sony X-series appear to have a lot to offer in a decent-sized package, though I don't know if touch screens are really something that you'll need, let alone want. And it's probably a safe bet that neither of them is going to do much better if a set of weights lands on them Wink.

One player I'd recommend looking at is the flash-based Cowon iAudio 7; in its largest size it's only 16GB, but it has a rated charge life of 60 hrs. Cowons are known for great sound quality and have a strong if relatively small fan base. However it too isn't guaranteed against free weights...

HI FI MP3 JUST FIT YOUR UNIQUE REQUIREMENTS

1. Has to have GREAT sound quality and nice bass.

AMP3 is the only hi fi mp3 player in the market. The sound quality is five time than other mp3 player.

2. Atleast 25-30 hrs of battery time and 20Gs of space is minimum.

The battery time is 100hous super long time.

There is a expanding SDcard slot, you can expand any memory by music gengres

3. QUALITY, I mistreated my Sony player badly during these years and it never failed me. No problems with that "input headphones hole" (you know when you press the headphone socket to one direction and the sound on one side dissapears etc)

The quality of AMP3 is audiophile standard. The factory quality guarrantee time is 18months.

4. Size! It has to be small! Not like super small, but atleast so small that you can put it in your pocket without it bothering you. And like I said, I need no big screens and video support! Only music support.

The screen is OLED, is visible under the sun. It don't spport the vidio just for the purest sound quality.

if you don't like the player, you can have a 30 days full money back + $ 10 returning shiping fee compensation.

you can check it at EBAY with this keyword:

High End sound quality portable audio Hi-Fi Mp3 player

Good luck.

Yes

I'm sure that spending $150 on an extremely ugly, no name mp3 player with only 4GB of memory (even if it does have an SD card slot for expansion) is high on everyone's list. They seem to be selling like hotcakes (a grand total of 1 since the listing date, April 30th).

In addition to the other SENSIBLE suggestions already given, you may want to consider the Sansa Clip. It has been hailed for it's excellent sound quality, and although the largest capacity Clip is only 4GB, it has a micro SD card expansion slot, and costs HALF of what the previously mentioned no name player from Hong Kong does. Another fine choice would be the Sandisk Sansa Fuze, which comes in a 16 GB size, but also has a micro SD card slot.

FYI...regarding SanDisk Sansa Clip

The SanDisk Sansa Clip does NOT have a memory expansion slot and is available in capacities of up to 8GB. But it is a nice player. I own a few myself.

I appreciate the correction. Not sure what I was thinking of.
