A question regarding my disk space

Mar 12, 2004 10:04PM PST

well to start of with i had first deleted several files, taking the disc space to 3.7Gb. i then used Diskeeper V.8 to defrag my PC for the first time (in a long time) when it finished i restarted my PC only to realise that my disk space was now 4.5Gb, why?

Are you aware that when your defragmenter runs...

a. Directories take up space as well? Directory EXTENTS are also revamped and space reclaimed.
b. In Windows, the PAGING FILE (swap) can take more or less space.

No big mystery.

Because.

Because there was that much used by directory entries, paging file and such. You could find out exactly where the space is, but are not working your issue directly. I've shared the other two items that people often overlook.

It's your machine. Take time to find where the space is.

Pencil, paper, numbers.

If you want, right click on the directory and properties to show it size. Write down that number.

Defrag or whatever the exercise, and repeat the right click properties. Compare the old number with the new.

I'm unsure if this is of much use since I've shared what can change size, but maybe I didn't explain it well?
