General discussion

A question about a backup method using Acronis.

Aug 10, 2005 1:00PM PDT

1. What's the best overall backup method? Using Acronis HDD Cloning or the Disk Imaging? Is one superior to the other? I'm not getting the pros and cons of each method.

2. How well does the incremental backup work?

Thanks,

~Dave

Ok so...

...I guess that either no one knows or there is not any difference between the two methods. Or possibly this is so easy that I should be able to find the information on my own. Maybe I'll experiment with both and see for myself over time. Thanks anyway.

That didn't answer any of my questions, but it does help very much to know that Acronis itself works so well for someone else. Since I never used it before it was sort of a shot in the dark going by ''testimonials'' possibly backed by the company itself.

Do you use the image or cloning method to back up your main HDD? Have you ever had to restore any system with it? Do you use the incremental back up with the scheduler? I was mainly interested in these things.

Again, thanks very much.

Acronis True Image.

Used it over the last two years or so, anyway from v6 through current v8. Excellent program, easy to use.

Always used Imaging of C:\ drive. Do it every two weeks or so. Never used HD cloning. Always use full backup. Save the last two backups plus the image of virgin installation., delete older versions. Feel no need for incremental backups, as have a lot of free HD space.

Restored twice. Once using Explore Image function to cherry pick individual programs. Once from total system crash, using the latest Acronis Bootable disk and the Restore Image function.
Restored my computer to C:\ image that was four days old. Worked like a charm.

This does not answer your direct questions but I hope helps you to use the product effectively. Please note that having an Acronis Bootable Disk prepared in advance is essential to the success of restoration from a total system crash. That disk can be recorded any time.

...that helps a lot. You answered my main questions. I have a lot better idea now as to a backup strategy.

Thanks again,
