A medical check

by keyhoti2 / December 8, 2004 6:05 PM PST

An old friend of mine - well not that old, only 65 - recently went for a medical check-up.

After two visits, blood tests, X-rays and so on, his doctor said he was doing quite well for his age.

That rather alarmed my friend, who couldn't resist asking, "Do you think that I might live until about 80?"

His doctor asked, "Do you smoke and drink alcohol?"

"Oh no," said my friend, "I have never smoked and I very seldom drink."

His doctor asked, "Do you have BBQs and do you ever eat fatty foods?"

"Very rarely." Said my friend.

"Well do you spend a lot of time in the sun, such as if you play golf, go sailing, or ride a motorcycle?"

"Oh no." Said my friend.

"OK," said his doctor, "do you gamble, drive fast cars and sexually fool around?"

"No," said my friend, feeling quite pleased with himself, "I have never done any of that."

"Then why," said his doctor, "do you want to live to be 80?"

Hey: it was a joke ... it never really happened.

Oh dear!!!

Has the world become so "politically correct" that no one can any longer appreciate satire, e.g. that offered by Monty Python ... not that I imagine I can be on that genius level.

Nay mind "Chorus-Line", it was a joke ... if with an embedded critique of "political correctness", such as the irrational prejudice against those of us who smoke tobacco.
