Now, if Microsoft could just get Security Essentials up to something approaching the bar set by pretty much everyone else, that would mean a lot more. Odds are this was some compromise MS worked out with the likes of the Chinese government, which wanted them to extend XP's support again. No security patches for the OS, but you won't be left completely in the lurch... Right away.

I finally loaded Windows 7 Professional on my wife's computer since they use that at work and since XP support ends in April. Set it up as 32 bit in a dual boot, so I don't have to reload ALL her software from XP to W7, yet. In some ways it's better than Vista, but others it's not. My home network is NOT called "homegroup" and I've not yet gotten it to accept my network's name, so it only sees itself. There seems to be less control over networking in it than I had in XP or even Vista. Added Microsoft Security Essentials to it for her. Looks like it's Linux all the way for me after XP support ends, although I'll keep XP running a bit with updated virus till something really scary shows up for it after Microsoft patches end.

Carol, this is for XP only, right?

I read the first link in your post, but this is referring to XP only as I read it. Since Defender is integrated into Windows 8, I assume MS is not dropping it from more recent versions of Windows, right?

AFAIK.. Only XP users are affected...
