A Little Help Please

Feb 11, 2004 8:22AM PST

When a message page fills up with 50 or more posts, such as the one you have here with over 200 posts. How do you find the next and succeeding messages after clicking on the "NEXT" button at bottom of page?

Sometimes I can Find them, but its quite a job clicking on messages and moving all over the place hunting for the next message. Tried FAQ at C/Net which did'nt help.

Any Tips out there. Has to be an easier way than this.
Thought I could figure it out on my own, but gave up after a month of struggling with it.

Thanks, george

Hi, George.

Unfortunately, that's a weakness of the software. Fixing it is on the wish list, but the resources for changes are minimal at best Sad

For a long time I thought it was me. I feel better now knowing it was'nt my amateur talents showing.

My method is
Feb 11, 2004 3:32PM PST

...to clk on the NEXT link at the bottom of the page and then open each item I want to read by right clking on the link and choosing to open in a new page. After finishing the messages on that page (50-100) I then clk on the NEXT button again and move to the next group of messages (100-150)and use the same approach. To answer messages that have a note that no more replies are accepted, you replace 5208 in the location line with 5224 and hit the Enter key, or clk on the Go button, depending on which browser you use.

"...right clking on the link and choosing to open in a new page."

Yep, the right clicking then selecting 'Open in new Window' was what Moderator Roke advised me to do back in March 2000 two-three weeks after the then new Trickler forum system started.

Wonder what happened to Roke. He is not listed as a Mod on the latest listing, never said goodby, and don't believe he has posted on the forums in more than a year. He used to be very active in the Newbie and Computer Help forums and visited here in SE.

Hi, JR.

I wonder (and worry) about Roke, too. Neither his web site nor e-mail addy are valid now, either (actually, for almost a year, now Sad )

Hi George,

I manually change the ID=1 at the end of the URL to 51, 101 or whatever is necessary. Then I read posts and use the back button to get back the page. The software's way of changing the start/stop "page" displayed is most annoying otherwise.

Hi, Evie.

Huh? When I look at one of the URLs, it ends with "MessageID= " and a six digit number.

Same thing here Dave.
and when I change it, it comes up a frozen half page???

It's only in the long threads ...
Feb 13, 2004 4:39AM PST

... like this one

The URL ends with threadID=11354&start=0

Sorry, I was reading from another URL with ID= when I composed my post. It's that start=# that I change manually in the URL. This gives me a page with the second 50 posts (or third 50, etc.). In using the back button to return to this page, I can follow better than the software which seems to change that # so that you have to scroll down through 48 posts to read the 49th with the 50th displayed on the bottom Sad

Hope that didn't confuse you more!

I think I figured it out now Evie. Thank you.

At least this last time I tried it, it worked.

Whew, I thought I had a virus in this old box the way it cough up the pages. I would'nt go changing any of those other numbers, like I did.

Thanks for the help everybody.
