General discussion

A just-in case post FYI

Jul 22, 2007 8:20AM PDT

While I was writing a post on Computer Newbies, I experienced something weird which resulted in my computer going haywire. I got back to desktop but my copy/paste/delete and other features were not working. The computer did not freeze. I could not do a restart but I could do a shutdown. No applications running in Task Manager.

While writing my post on Cnet, it appeared to me that one of the banner ads that had the word "ASK" in large print on it was 'acting up' along with a Site-Advisor red flag at its side. At the risk of sounding like a blonde (which I am) in those seconds of panic, it felt as if the banner was fighting with me for control Happy

That's all I remember about what happened while I was on Cnet because I instinctively felt I had to get out of there ASAP or faster.

I don't think any damage has been done and after 10 minutes when I turned the computer back on, all was well..... but I thought I should post this anyway FYI.....I am a great one for just-in-case.

You could be right.

I'm sure Lee will read this and perhaps ask some questions.

But some of these ads can seem to take over. Which browser do you use? If you use Firefox you could download their AddBlock Plus add-on, it will remove all ads from web sites.

Hi Mark -- I am ashamed to admit that although my intentions are good I have not yet put Firefox on my system.....I have, however, installed Firefox on friends' computers.

I don't have much of a problem with ads -- I.E. works for me and blocks most and NIS blocks 'referer' sites.

That said, at the time of my duel with the Cnet banner ad, I was on AOL. I do not usually browse when on AOL, but I was already there when I picked up the notifier E-mail for the Cnet thread.

My thanks for your reply.

Devil

No need to be ashamed Miki. You use what works for you, and that is what matters most.

Although I use Firefox most of the time I didn't download the AddBlock Plus add-on for ages. I'm not sure why because I couldn't do without it now.

I've reported this twice. . .

A banner ad pops up and totally freezes the PC as well as taking up half the screen. Lee is aware of it. Whether it gets fixed is another story. Ads make money.

Hi coryphaeus -- it's been a long time Happy

I cannot imagine Cnet keeping an advertiser whose website brings up a red flag from Site Advisor and battles with a subscriber.....regardless of revenue......bad for their reputation which is certainly as important as money, if not more so.
